On Friday, Prime Minster Steven Harper announced that Canada will establish a military base and winter fight school in an attempt to re-establish sovereignty over the arctic region currently contested by Russia, Denmark, Norway and the US.
Harper said of the new facilities that they will "tell the world that Canada has a real, growing, long-term presence in the Arctic." The upcoming Canadian winter fighting school is to be built in Resolute Bay, part of the Northwest Passage.
Plans also include the renovation of an old dock and runway, which would be used to supply patrol vessels in the Arctic.
Announced last month by Harper were plans to construct six or eight ice-breaking patrol vessels, costing $7.1 billion.
