Getting Paid to Lose Weight

Men in the Italian town of Varallo will be paid 50 euros if they can lose 4 pounds in a month and women will be paid the same to lose 3 pounds, according to the local mayor Gianluca Buonanno.

Another 200 euros will be forthcoming if the weight is kept off for 5 months the mayor told Reuters. Mayor Buonanno thought it was a good idea to get the town to go on a group diet to assist his own weight loss as he was about 13 pounds overweight.

4 pounds? 50 euros for 4 pounds? holy crap. 4 pounds is almost negligible to lose... A minor lifestyle change for a total of 250 euros... Why would you not do this?

  you could get...
most of that with water loss. Good idea for a local level, seems a bit much monies for little progress though.

  No, its a bad idea
I could lose 4 pounds, so could my 6 stone friend, for me it would be healthy, it would half kill her.

Its a punch in the face to anyone who already works to maintain a sensible weight.

Your friend can't lose 3 pounds? Perhaps, she should look into anorexia treatments?

thats a pretty large jump in logic. the fact is that it's just not that easy for some people. I know people who exercise constantly and barely eat anything that can't lose a pound.

I suppose there are some people who do suffer from a legitimate problem that does cause them to be overweight, despite exercise and a proper diet. However, I feel that the large majority of overweight people do not have this condition. They merely don't put forth the effort to achieve a healthier lifestyle. Anyway, even in the cases of people with legitimate problems, I suspect people could lose the weight via water loss.

Although as Goge pointed out, the system is a bit whacked. Someone who already leads a healthy lifestyle could be persuaded to lead an unhealthy one by losing more weight.
