US Army Soldier Suicide At Highest In 26 years

A new military report which will officially be released on Thursday has found that US Army soldiers are committing suicide at the highest rates in 26 years, as last year 99 active troops committed suicide.

The rate of suicide among US Army soldiers has swelled to 17.3 soldiers per 100,000 last year, up from 9.1 per 100,000 in 2001.

The leading causes of suicide, the report cites, are failed personal financial problems, job stress and legal issues. The report also cites a "significant relationship" in suicide attempts and duration of which the soldiers were deployed.

  Google it?

From the WHO (USA, 1999) official figures (which are always distorted, especially for insurance purposes):
males 17.6, females 4.1.

Remember that figure isn't comparable because its for the population as a whole, including older or mentally unwell people who aren't eligible for the military.
Also it's 8 years old, anyone find a newer figure?

  About the same

rate as civilians from James' post?

In any case, they're soldiers, they kill, be it 'terrorists', women and children, each other or themselves.

War is bad. Simple as that.

  Keep in mind

This story/report is only focusing on US ARMY soldiers...what about AF, Marines, Navy...and is this limited to active duty or does it include reservists/guard soldiers who have been activated and sent for deployment? Interesting to find out...
