Kids Living by Power Lines 3-5 Times Likelier to Get Cancer in Adulthood

Researchers analyzing 850 cases of bone marrow and lymphatic cancers diagnosed from 1972-80 show that children who spent the first 5 years of their life living within 328 yards of power lines had a 500% higher chance of getting cancer later in life.

Children who lived for any time at all within that distance before age 15 still had a 300% higher chance. Published in the Internal Medicine Journal, the study is a joint effort between Britain's Bristol University and the University of Tasmania.

Prof Ray Lowenthal:"The evidence of detrimental long-term health effects is far from conclusive, and international guidelines for limiting exposure to EMF are based on possible short-term effects rather than longer-term disease risks such as cancer."

  Grammar

Having just had a whole tedious argument about grammar on one of my stories I hate to bring this up, but I believe the correct expression is 'more likely' as opposed to 'likelier.'

I didn't dispute that the word existed, merely that it was more correct to word it the other way.

"likelier" and "more likely" are interchangable... its mostly just a funny looking word, but they are verbatiam to each other, if one can be used the other can be used, the other can... personally i think likelier sounds better... likelier is a word i use from time to time, but almost never in writen language; almost exclusively in spoken language. more likely just adds a second adjective to describe the same thing as likelier.

It may also be an American English vs. British English thing. Just like Americans say 'burglarized' and Brits say 'burgled.'

Out of interest I did a non-scientific poll on the BBC news web site. "Likelier" appeared on 32 pages of search results. "More likely" had over 500 pages of hits. So 'more likely' is likelier to appear on that web site :P

I did the same search on USA Today. The expression 'more likely' appears 278 times in latest news, and over 1000 times in the archives. Whereas 'likelier' appears once in the latest news, and only 17 times in the archives.

For my non-scientific tests I did put the search in quotes so that I was not getting double hits for 'more' and 'likely,' they had to appear together.

So I accept that it is a word, and I accept that the two expressions are interchangeable. But I still believe that 'more likely' is a better choice for this title, and constitutes a more proper (or properer) use of the language.

" a more proper (or properer) use of the language."

or more simply said "better diction". ;)

english is far too bastardized to have any real proper use... even English english isn't quite what english was... american and canadian english have variation and both are seperate from English english.

likelier could be used as an eye cather to... like it said early its an odd-looking word, i think likelier flow better in spoken english.

i'll have to agree with ZCT

Sorry, but i totally agree with ZCT.

In that context, more likely is far more appropriate shall we say.

@havoc
"personally i think likelier sounds better..."

i guess it really is a british english / american english thing, because in my mind, likelier just sounds bad english to me.

And seeing as ZCT is originally from the uk i believe, and seeing as i am english, we're right and you're wrong! :P

ner ner ner ner :P

  Good Story

Blow the spelling!

This power line thing has always bothered me and I have someone close to me that lives right below a mobile phone mast; this has to be dangerous!

lol... for some reason when i read that i got a flashback of the movie "a knights tale" where the guys that follow heath ledger around make a bet with the french:

one of the french guys in the tavern: "everyone know english legs are unsteady on french soil, and beside the pope is french"
heath ledgers friend in the movie: "yeah well the pope may be french, but jesus is english, your on"

so i mean did it occur that this statistic would apply to nearly EVERYONE, i mean sure not quite everyone but hell, everyone has power lines near them. Some are underground or overhead but hell unless you dont have power theres going to be power lines running near your house.
