Verizon Exec: New LG Device Will "Kill The iPhone"
Verizon Wireless Chief Marketing Officer Mike Lanman said while talking to the press about the new LG phone, the Voyager VX 10000: "We think it'll be the best phone... this year. It will kill the iPhone." It also has a touch screen on the front.
It also opens up like the enV, with another screen and full keyboard inside. It will run on their wireless broadband network, which is faster than AT&T's EDGE network. It will also have an 8GB microSD slot, stereo speakers and a 2MP camera.
However, one thing it won't have that iPhone does is Wi-Fi. Set for a late November launch, the phones will cost "from under $100 to about $400."
"I think a nerd is a person who uses the telephone to talk to other people about telephones. And a computer nerd therefore is somebody who uses a computer in order to use a computer." -Douglas Adams
Not quite sure why I recall this quote, but it seems timely.
t-mobile will be the last carrier to jump in with a iphone killer but recently they put out a rebranded HTC and that crappy dash. so looks like this will be the next best thing for now. like iphone battery life isn't mentioned
only partially tru there. if anyone else releases the phone, chances are, their firmware will be different. its actually really simple to re-flash firmware from one company over your old one. ... example- i have a motorola razor v3m from sprint but im running Alltel's firmware on it. everything works the way its supposed to, but faster, easier, and more functions than Sprint has.
gotta love flashing eh? I put modded stock razr firmware on mine then changed the startup and shutdown and replaced the icons ... I now have a fully cool looking 'dark side' phone :)
Anyway ... no wifi and its gonna be a killer? It will be to those who arent fully clued up to the advantages of it or arent interested but I dont see the point. I havent bought a phone in 6 years, was given the razr or else id still be using a nokia 3310, Ive been waiting to buy one that does what I want. iPhone has all the features and the big nokias 'n' this phone have the keyboard I want ... someone will make one I want one day. I do intend to get an iPhone after xmas though, I think there will be people that get them and dont want them. I plan to get one cheap though.
The way I understand it, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the wireless broadband service provided by Verizon is faster and operates over a larger range than Wi-Fi, I think it uses WiMAX technology. I guess as long as you live in an urban area where this sort of thing is prevalent, the lack of Wi-Fi may not be so bad.
Until Steve Jobs gets caught doing something illegal we'll continue to hear about how great all of Apple's shitty products are and why we should give them our money and lick Job's sweaty sac.
for their 'mobile broadband' service, they use an EV-DO cellular network. ATT uses a EDGE cellular network. i dont know what the acronyms stand for but i know ev-do gets muuuuuch faster speeds than edge.
wifi is more for private wireless networking, whereas wimax is for wireless broadband internet service. wimax will work from 30-40 miles away, i think. wifi, only 300 meters or so, maybe 500, with the new 802.11n technology.
wi-max is wireless, but its fixed point only. wimax is going wireless though. i think its sprint who will be offering mobile wimax service. even then, i think you cant move faster than 75 mph, and i would bet service is going to spotty, to nonexistent. im sure once things come out with wimax built in, they will start being backwards compatible with wifi services.
im not sure that i would call it a iphone killer, though. it IS missing wifi. .. even T-Mobile offers wifi/cellular phone service, and they are horrible IMO.
i forgot to include the fact that, the iphone, will link up to a wifi network if there is one there, so you dont even use their edge service. you are using the wifi signal your phone picks up. theoretically, wifi would then blow the doors off EV-DO, but i would imagine its just like cable broadband service, the more users at a access point, the slower it is, right?
i can never get it all in before i seem to hit the send button. ... for anyone interested- here is a really explanatory PDF on the wifi v. wimax thing. .... not too hard to read through. .. http://www.cs.jhu.edu/
the phrase "i(insert whatever here) Killer" is the kiss of death... sort of like when Dublin bands in the 80's and 90's were tipped to be "the next U2" ...just never seemed to come true
Also, this isn't _news_. Company executives claiming their company's new product is a "<merchandise>-killer" is the cheapest, most ineffective, most overused PR, AND hardly unbiased.
I've been reading all this junk about Apple's iPhone losing competetive advantage. Well it's really just alot of hot air. iPhone/iPod interfaceis already the standard in 70% of the worlds new cars that are manufactured. It is the most reliable and pervasive new technology. I have not been a fan of Apple since they strategically lost the market they once owned to IBM/Compatibles but on this issue, the critics are wrong. The iphone is one of the few products to hit the market where the hype = (equals) the functionality. Verizon had first right of refusal on the iPhone and they passed because they felt that they could launch their own me too type product and charge create service revenue for services available through podcasting and downloading for free. They executives at Verizon who passed on that deal should be fired. The guy who cut that deal for AT&T has recently been promoted to CEO. Ralph de la Vega.
I have been waiting patiently for smart phones to hit the market (7-8 years of hype). Now the iphone syncs to Outlook, provides wireless sync-ing, conects via Wi-Fi extending voice usage without satellite conect charges and has the most advance browser (safari) than the one Google has spent 10's of millions of dollars trying to perfect. Eric S., the CEO of Google, carries and iPhone. I am a windows professional and developer. I am comfortable and efficient with Windows. I will not buy a MAC. But will continue to covet the best device produced by Apple, the iPhone.
