Toshiba Builds Micro Nuclear Reactor

An entirely new class of Nuclear Power Reactor has been designed to fill a niche that could power everything from small communities to businesses. The entire reactor is only 6 ft by 20 ft in size.

The 200 KW reactor is designed to be fail-safe and completely automated. Lacking control rods, the reactor uses a tube of liquid lithium-6 to absorb neutrons. It is predicted to run for 40 years without refueling.

The reactor will produce electricity at 5 cents per KW hour. Current grid prices for electricity are 10 cents/KW hour. The first reactors are expected to be installed in Japan next year and will be arriving in the US and Europe in 2009.

  I'd assume

the measurement left out is height, anyone know how tall the thing will be?

 by: fballer23   12/18/2007 06:43 PM
  Sounds cool

Now just a small concern, when town A gets pissed off with town B what to stop them blowing up this conviniantly placed pile of nucular material and giving everyone radiation poisoning...

im not paranoid, just a question.

  Hmmm

I'd be interested in seeing how they've worked out costs, but sounds awesome.

because there is a big difference between nuclear fuel and nuclear bombs.

Having a facility that can change the former into the later isn't something folks are going to be able to do out of their garages.

Hell, these things are sodium-cooled. Anyone cracking these things open to get inside are liable to go up in a very large (non-nuclear) boom.

  I want my jetpack.

Watch penn and teller's bullshit. Nuclear is a good word, it's the "bomb" part that messes the whole thing up. It's the difference between pu**y and pu**ycat. Nuclear power is good, it's just the a**holes that pervert the technology that are the problem. We should all be flying around with jetpacks by now..

i know how a nucular bomb works (have done much research over the years) i want worried about it being the bomb just if someone decided to use their own explosives what nasty S**t whould come out

 by: waz1578   12/19/2007 09:41 AM
  @Waz

Probably wont be that bad.

It sounds like it runs itself, so you could bury the thing under 40feet of concrete and forget about it.

So Town A pissed at Town B. What if Town A bombs the reactor of Town B. A good question is then raised, what is the potential for a meltdown by those things?

I only want to know cuz it will affect how far a house I will buy from one.

  i don't know about you guys...

but i'm thinking a nuclear powered car. (can't wait to see crash tests)

 by: guyfawkes   12/21/2007 02:31 AM
  Its a damn good idea...

I think it's a damn good idea and about time, I've felt this about about the idea since about 1988. That was the year I visited Missouri State Uni and found out that they powered damn near the whole campus, and fair amount of Columbia, MO, with a mini nuke [mini reactor].

I think the idea would be pretty good, we need to find SOMETHING other than coal and natural gas to generate cheap electricity and when it comes to the 'bang for the buck' concept, nukes are hard to beat!

  Ultimate

Interesting how people take their thoughts to the extreme but in this case it does pose some food for thought. ie how about a nuclear battery installed in a dildo. @ 40 years of service how many orgasims would that be? Just a thought.

 by: starmutt   12/24/2007 05:48 AM
  solar is still the best way

solar energy has no waste,danger or destruction, only high material cost.

@starmutt your a perv , grow up.

 by: kross10c   12/26/2007 07:21 PM
  @kross10c

Actually someone did find something bad about solor. Birds tend to slam into the mirrors. But of course that shouldn't be as big of a problem as other energy sources.

 by: bala_mt   12/26/2007 08:53 PM
  @kross10c

Solar is not the way exactly as you stated a high material cost, booyah.
