Pyramid Discovery in Mexico City Could Mean City is Older

The uncovering of an 800-year-old pyramid built by the Aztecs in what is now central Mexico City seems to indicate that the ancient settlement is at least 100 years older than was previously believed.

The 36-feet-high ruins were discovered in the Tlatelolco area, which was once a focal point of Aztec culture. Historians had long believed that the Aztecs founded Tlatelolco at the same time as its ancient twin city, nearby Tenochtitlan.

However, the newly discovered pyramid suggests that the Mexico City area was being developed by the Aztecs as early as 1100. "The (Aztec) timeline is going to need to be revised," said an archaeologist who participated in the research.

  You have to realize...

... that entire country is absolutely littered with ruins. It's quite easy to step out into someone's backyard, pull aside bushes and see ruins sticking out of the ground.

By the same token, it wouldn't take thousands of years or even hundreds of years for local plantlife to take root on a structure by and large made of earth. That hill in your backyard could just as easily be a thousand-year old pyramid reclaimed by local plantlife.

Also, just because it was a discovery, doesn't mean that people didn't know it was there. It could easily mean that they knew it was there but didn't know what exactly it was or its historical significance until now. That would qualify it as a 'discovery'.
