London: Dr Fiona MacNeill, a surgeon at the Royal Marsden Hospital, has calmly completed an operation on a breast cancer patient while a fire raged elsewhere in the hospital. Several other operating theatres and wards were destroyed.
At this stage it appears that the surgery was very successful. The blaze did tens of millions in damage despite the efforts of 125 firefighters. The hospital will be reopening a number of sections over the coming days and the cleanup is underway.
"I was aware it was a very serious fire, but I didn’t know how far away it was. I decided to carry on as normal. We’re trained to deal with emergency situations. But I must admit this was a once in a lifetime one for me," said MacNeill.
