Dog Digs Up Dead Cat Companion, Returns Him to Basket

Wigan: After a friendship that extended to sharing a basket, a dog named Oscar has shown he was not content to let the grave separate him from his feline companion Arthur.

Arthur died at the age of 17 and was buried in the back yard of his owners. During the night Oscar dug Arthur up, cleaned him up, and carried him to the basket they had shared. The two were found together in the basket the next morning.

Arthur has been reburied in a grave that is much more likely to let him rest in peace and Oscar has a new companion - a kitten called Limpet. According to owner Mavis Bell Oscar is already very protective of his new friend.

I wonder if Oscar will attempt to dig up Arthur again, now that he has help.

  My neighbor had black cat and a golden retriever

Every afternoon I would see the cat and dog sitting on the side of the road waiting for mom and dad to come home. One morning I saw the cat, dead, run over. After that the dog would sit there by himself after that and looked so sad. I could tell he missed his cat. I felt for him.

Great find ixuzus, helps one realize what really matters.

  Good find

Another point to mention when people start in with the old "animals" have no emotions, feelings, compassion, or "soul" argument. At times it seems like humans are further removed from these qualities than many of the other lifeforms on the planet.

I remember watching a National Geographic show where an elephant mother had "lost" one of her young. Its body was laying motionless in the dirt and the mother kept nudging the calf with her trunk, and trying to pick it up to take it with her as the herd was leaving. This went on for days. Heartbreaking stuff.

  @All

I think that the comments here say as much as the article. SN commentators can be kinda harsh and insensitive at times, myself included, and the fact that no one has yet taken it to a dark place really speaks well of the story. Good find.
