The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has come out with a new warning: your child might be abusing cough syrup. According to a 2006 survey about 5% of teens and young adults have admitting to using cough syrup to get high.
This is comparable to LSD usage and surpasses methamphetamine use in the same age range. Over 140 cough and cold medicines have the ingredient that is the cause for the high feeling, DMX.
High amounts of DMX can cause blurry vision, slurred speech, disorientation and vomiting. White youth are three times more likely to abuse this than Hispanic youth which come in second and least likely is black youth.
