Sleep Ruined by Radiation, Says Study Funded by Cell Phone Makers

Considered to be more comprehensive than any study to date, cell phone company-funded research by scientists in the US and Sweden have found that those who use cell phones before bed do not get as much deep sleep, and take longer to get there.

The study, led by Professor Bengt Arnetz, exposed some of the participants to electromagnetic radiation that represented typical cell phone output and gave others a placebo. Recipients of true exposure consistently had more problems sleeping.

Arnetz believes the stress system in the brain is being activated, "making people more alert and more focused, and decreasing their ability to wind down and fall asleep." The mobile industry disputes the results, despite other corroborative research.

  There is just to much..

we don't know about these phones, it is a big worry when you have a Teen that won't leave the thing alone.

  What about...

Computers? Wireless routers? Cordless phones?

=/ Maybe that's why I don't get much sleep.

  The radiation connection is bs

Any activity before sleep like talking on the phone, using your pc, watching a football game, etc. will affect your sleep pattern. I bet ($1) you would get the same results if they tested those who were using landline phones.

The thing is, the test subjects did not actually talk on the phone. They were merely subjected to a similar radiation as what's put out by a cell phone.

I don't know anyone under 30 who still has a landline phone.

  Huh?

Watchoo talkin' 'bout Willis? From the source "The research, sponsored by the mobile phone companies themselves, shows that using the handsets before bed causes people to take longer to reach the deeper stages of sleep and to spend less time in them, interfering with the body's ability to repair damage suffered during the day. "

I believe it. And I would love to get rid of mine but experience has taught me that no matter how good a cell phone or provider is, a cell phone at is simply not going to work 100 % of the time. Landlines don't drop calls or get bad reception.

What if you used a headset hooked to the

phone and didnt put your head directly in contact with the phone itself? Does this require direct contact say within 6 inches or so or just general proximity?

Do regular phones cause this same stress level in the brain?

  @John E Angel

They're assuming that since they administered the same level and frequency of electromagnetic radiation normally given off by cell phones in the study, that they can go ahead and say with confidence that this is the same environment one is in with a cell phone handset against their head.

@slavefortheman: Not only cordless phones, but baby monitors also.

I'm under 30 and I have a landline.

I really don't understand all this rampage against landlines. They are way cheaper than cellphones and more reliable. Specially in North America where no matter who makes the call both cellphone owners get charged for "air time"... its so much bs.
Back in my home country if they try to implement air time ppl would just burn down the company.

Regarding the article, I believe anything disrupt your sleep, cellphones are no different.

Land lines will eventually go away.

Reliability is becoming less of an issue. I have zero problems using my cell in the house, and I know next to nobody who *only* owns a land line and no cell. Given all the options that come with cell calling plans nowadays, and the fact that you don't get charged for calling others nationwide on your network without extra charges... well, it's tough to justify a land line, especially since it can't go with you.

  Don't get me wrong

I'm absolutely 100% pro cellphones, I believe they are a necesity. Everytime I go on vacations with friends or family to another country, the first thing I do is cheap buy a cellphone; you simply need to be able to get in touch or be contacted some how.

But well, until cellphones become cheaper and more reliable; landlines will be here. I simply can't afford 4 hour calls to my gf on a cellphone.

ERrrrr I own only a landline and I'm 26 and have a wife and child. I got a talkin to from my dad and stepmom for not having a cell phone, but I don't feel like having a cell phone, I remember when no one used to own any.

Ooh! Ooh! I got a question

When was the last time you actually saw a pay phone? And someone actually using one.

Ooh! Ooh! I got a question

Well that's a silly question. Everyone knows the telephone companies are getting out of that business as quickly as they can. They make more money from cell phone users with no maintenance costs for the phones.

There's no such thing as a silly question.

i'm with you on this one and its a waste of money to study it.

I use to fall asleep while talking on the mobile as a young man.

I just recently got a "landline" again (I'm 23) and I've realized just how much I missed it. I actually am considering dropping my cell phone and just sticking with the land line itself. Because well, I don't really need or want to talk to people all of the time. Aside from emergencies, they can wait until I get home. It's just nice having the convenience of a cell phone.

  Wireless Networks

What really makes me laugh about this subject is that so many people are worried about this radiation from their mobile phones (and rightly so to some degree). However, what makes me laugh is the fact that this radiation from your mobile (cell) phone is NOTHING compared to the radiation from a wireless network. Wireless networks use the same radiation on the same frequency, yet your wireless network is pumping out LOADS more (something like 10 times +) then a mobile (cell) phone ever could!

People really dont realise this, and it just makes me chuckle that people keep talking about their mobiles and about having mobile masks near schools etc. Personally, i would rather have a mask closer to the school / my house, you know why? because then your mobile phone isnt producing as much radiation / enegry to get the signal back to the mask. Also.. wireless networks are everywhere!!!! including more and more in schools!!!

If i had a kid i would be extremely worried if their school had a wireless network, especially as the children are in the classrooms most of the time, with the wireless networks. There was a really good panorama documentary on it.

Basically, bottom line.. stop worrying about mobile (cell) phones radiation, because it truely is insignificant compared to wireless communcations.
