A U.S. spy satellite, possibly containing hazardous materials, has lost power and is beyond control, anonymous U.S. government sources say. The satellite is large and it is unknown where on Earth it will crash.
It is expected to land by late February or early March. Lawmakers and other countries are being kept up to date on the situation, a source said, adding that it was inappropriate to discuss whether the satellite might be intercepted by a missile.
In 1979, the 78-ton space station Skylab went out of control and crashed into the Indian Ocean and across a remote area of west Australia. Other satellites have similarly lost control and crashed.
