Out-of-Control Satellite To Crash; Hazardous Materials Could Be On Board

A U.S. spy satellite, possibly containing hazardous materials, has lost power and is beyond control, anonymous U.S. government sources say. The satellite is large and it is unknown where on Earth it will crash.

It is expected to land by late February or early March. Lawmakers and other countries are being kept up to date on the situation, a source said, adding that it was inappropriate to discuss whether the satellite might be intercepted by a missile.

In 1979, the 78-ton space station Skylab went out of control and crashed into the Indian Ocean and across a remote area of west Australia. Other satellites have similarly lost control and crashed.

 Good question. Though more then one satellite would probably have been affected if it was from the sun.

  So...
 what are the hazardous materials?

  i hope it lands...
 ...somewhere in israel.

  The Whitehouse
 would be a suitable landing spot, that would restore my faith in karma.

I wonder what 'hazardous materials' they are and why said materials need to be in space?

  Isnt this
 how Night of the Living Dead started?

Satellite crashes into Earth containing hazardous materials, radiation spreads around, dead people start walking around?

Crap...

 Anything that big that may fall on my head is, by definition, ALL hazardous material.

  eh
 may be spelling this wrong but it contains a rocket fuel called hydrazine. its poisonous if your around it without a chem suit. this isnt the G.I.Jane film ppl :-P but it would make a good story. ohh i got it now.

*nuclear powered spy sat. lands in iran. U.S. mil says thats it, its ours. U.S. gov says, yes we are certain now they have nuclear power*

you can adapt the same story if it lands in iraq. hey they have nuke power now. we were just thinking THAT far ahead. who loves ya?

 Nope, I very much support the Palestinians in their ordeal. Hopefully it will land in occupied territory or better yet an IDF outpost somewhere.

  @Maxx20 and Ixuzus
 The hazardous material aboard the satellite is the core of it's nuclear power source. US satellites have been powered this way for many years.
The original solar power devices were flimsy, easily damaged and didn't produce enough reliable power.

  If the satellite crashes into the White House
 it will probably cause forty dollars worth of structural improvements and a major attitude adjustment for Dubya.

  @White Albino
 Wow, I didn't know they used mini-nuke reactors in spacecraft. Just been reading about it, didn't know there had been accidents with the things either. Although apparently safe, I don't like the idea that the US and Russia are dumping nuclear waste over our heads when their launches go wrong. I want to go live on another planet now, this one's too crazy for me.
