Argentina Strikes Oil

Pan American Energy, a UK-Argentine oil company, has announced the discovery of a huge oilfield in southern Argentina.

Mario Das Neves, governor of Chubut, a Patagonian province, said in a statement "An oil reserve has been discovered in the Escalante basin that's twice as big as what Chubut has produced to date."

He went on to explain how the company invested $700 million to make the find and called it "the most significant reserve that's been discovered in recent years."

  Ohhhhhh
 This is very interesting, unlike Brazil Argentina is more aligned towards Chavez, will have to see how this goes.

whichever way it goes I feel it will affect the influence of Chavez.

  Unlike Brazil?
 To maintain Washington's party line, though, it's necessary to finesse some of the facts. For example, when Lula was re- elected in October, one of his first acts was to fly to Caracas to support Chávez's electoral campaign. Also, Lula dedicated a Brazilian project in Venezuela, a bridge over the Orinoco River, and discussed other joint ventures.

 Chomsky? What a great comic! lol

Yeh, but that doesn't negate the fact that it might affect Venezuela's growing influence in the region.

  Well
 After 9-11 the US closed the doors to Argentina, taking away the visa waiver program, so I don't know how good of friends you could consider us. I am from Argentina so I would know, most people there dislike America-ns and as somebody already mentioned, Argentina is more inclined towards Chavez, at least the last president was, and now with his wife being the new elected president things won't change at all.

  Its not that surprising
 The east cost of SA should have plenty of oil, its just never been economic to look for before.

  Political Intrigue
 If wrong please correct.

Wasn't the Falklands war between Argentina & Britian really to stop Argentina from being able to mine the vast oil field in the south Atlantic. (Yes I know the new find is on the continent).

Seems strange that a UK oil company is involved.

Is the any strange politics in the background of this?

Or is it let bygones be bygones, all in the name of that little thing called greed?

  @Acrux
 Sort of

Argentina has claimed the Falkland islands, and still does in fact, for a variety of reasons.

The war was fought because the military junta of the time figured it would be an easy win that would distract the people from the crushing problems at home.

Now, Argentina has started reasserting its claim, Chavez has even gone so far as to promise military aid for the attempt to retake them.

But they arent really related, anymore than the UK having oil operations in Russia is to the current spat.

 If they had more Exocet missiles they would have won the war. France giving Britain the 'deop' codes for them didn't help things out either.
 by: FreakKeeper     01/28/2008 01:46 PM
  @Freak
 Good job MI6 stopped them getting any more missiles then isnt it?
As for deop codes, you are aware that not a single exorcet actualy exploded arent you?
They couldnt have ever "won" the war.

If we had been playing for keeps, we could have said bugger off or eat tridents.
We could have also simply blockaded the Islands, to prevent reinforcement and waited it out, or sank every ship that tried to sail into argentina, including its enitre navy.

The submarine arm had 6 subs sat off the Argentine coast for the entire war...
