Russian Bombers Stage Mock Attack on USS Nimitz

In the most serious incident of the new cold war so far, a Russian Tupolev 95 Bomber twice over flew the Carrier USS Nimitz and its battle group and at low altitude.

The incident started when 4 of the bombers launched from a Russian airbase and moved towards Japan. Two of the bombers headed south violating Japanese airspace, and the other two headed for the carrier group.

They were intercepted at 50 miles by four F-18s. One of the Russian bombers pulled off and circled the group, the second dropped to 2000 feet and flew over the carrier, then returned for a second pass.

The US is the one starting it too what with this stupid missile defense shield we are building.

It is nothing more than an offensive weapon against smaller countries in my opinion. There is no way it can be of use against the russians but it can be used against smaller nations that we deem a threat.

They launch their missiles in self defense or in retaliation and we simply shoot them down...

How does the US building a defence system in Poland compare with Russia attacking a US battle group?

Poland is not a bloody possesion of Russia.
If Poland wants a US missile system based in its country it damn well can have one.

Its got **** all to do with "Peaceful" Putin
  by: AnsweringQuestions     02/12/2008 03:19 PM
  Let's not forget..
Putin is probably not too happy that Ukraine, once part of the mighty USSR is now attempting to join NATO as well. Which means missle shield for them as well. This also gives the US a "Cuba" for this new Cold War.

Putin is far from a dove. He is a hawk. Unfortunately the US is causing him to be even more hawk like in his military policy.

If we were not building a missile offense shield he would not be pulling these stunts.

Its all cause an effect. The US is the Cause and Putin is the Effect.

"How does the US building a defence system in Poland compare with Russia attacking a US battle group?"

your right how does a national security threat like a missile sheild the the US has been warned against building compare with running a mock attack operation

"Poland is not a bloody possesion of Russia.

who said putin was peaceful... compared to bush yeah, but bush is on a level of saddam, hitler and stalin... putinb hasn't gone that far off the deep end yet, bush took that leap a long time ago.

and actually building the missile base would clearly be an act of aggression, personally if i were russia i'd let them build it then bomb it. unless of course the US is will wo let russia setup a defense sheild... perhaps in cuba AGAIN... and we all remember how the US reacted to that... that was the highest security level since pearl harbor and the highest up till 9/11... and you think russia is acting worse than the US did during an almost identical scenerio which was known to the west as "the cuban missile crisis", known to russia as "the caribbean crisis" and to the cuban as "october crisis".

as long as the US keeps militarily posturing itself around the world, the rest of the world can be expect to posture itself against the US.

  Let's keep this in perspective.
The Russians dispatched 4 PROPELLER driven bombers. That's like sending 4 B-17's or B-29's. If this had been war, they would have been toast as soon as they left the ground.

It could be a dirigible, if its right over head, it can sink a ship.

Way to dance around what AQ said.

POLLAND IS ITS OWN COUNTRY, if they want a missile defense system then so be it.

  $&()#*@ Russia and Bush.
They are provoking the USA by doing this. They are NOT the enemy of the USA. Putin wants to stimulate the war industry because it's profitable for him and his KGB.... er, I mean businessmen friends. The same for Bush.

Russia also harrasses NATO friendly countries within the EU. Does that make Russia at 'cold war' with NATO?

The phrase 'new cold war' is not in the source and is a fearmongering statement.

The US is still a friend of Russia, don't doubt it. This is business as usual. If Russia wanted to get it's ass kicked then it wouldn't already be selling missiles to Iran.

Come on guys, this pissing contest is just to scare up defense bucks.

I swapped return of the cold war for new cold war.
Its a stretch to say thats making things up.

What on earth are they playing at?

Although the Tu-95 is propeller driven - it is not a toy. In all parameters, it is comparable to the B52. The only difference is their cruise speeds - B52 @~650mpg - Tu-95 @~575mph.

To write them off because they have propellers shows lack of understanding of their capabilities. For reference - a B17 had a top speed of 295mph.

  Stupid USA
All they try is to drag the European Union into their stupid plans. And Poland betrays the other member states with its foolish decision. This nation is a disgrace for the union. They even wanted to get rid of our flag and national anthem.

yeahh.... but when Cuba wanted nuclear missiles then it was a US possesion, right?

  by: apc123   02/12/2008 07:56 PM
Nuclear attack missiles is quite a bit different from interceptor missiles. If Cuba had wanted a missile defense system, /that/ would have been a more reasonable comparison.
  by: velger   02/12/2008 08:24 PM
  why didnt the f-18's
engage then? If you breach the airspace and engage in what looks like threatening action around a ship, you would be engaged. I doubt a bomber would be allowed to get to 2k feet and fly overhead without anti air craft rounds being fired. Sounds a little strange to me. Also 2k feet is a low level to do a bombing run, 8-12k would be the best run normally.

I have a close friend on the Nimitz, I didn't hear about this until now, but I will definitely have a talk to him about this.

Sounds like a solid investment in Poland...
Till it's built and Poland decides to kick us out (within their sovereign right) and sell the technology off to the highest bidder("axis of evil") and the rest for scrape metal...

We are def going to get a lot of bang for our buck on this investment.

The deficit grows by another trillion, the dollar continues to deflate, the cost of goods inflate.
Meanwhile... the pentagon gets another half trillion dollars hot off the US presses.

Because why raise taxes when you can just print new funding? - Sounds good, right neo-cons?

Gotta love what our tax dollars get spent. Need to keep printing it and pouring it into the military to enforce it's value.

Military costs are skyrocketing and its effectiveness world wide is getting spread more and more thin.

lol... wow. what a shit stew that we brew.

Missile defenses are to protect from missiles. This is totally different than having another countries nukes right off your coast. If Russia feels so threatened, aim their nukes 190% the other direction and they will still reach their target.

Blame the U.S. all you want. But you fail to see what Russia has let happen in their own interests. You point your finger at me and blame me, I point my finger at you and blame you, this accomplishes nothing.
  by: slayer06   02/13/2008 03:00 AM

I think you should read this. Saying we need to keep it in perspective is kind of ridiculous. Seeing how Russia plans on continueing the TU-95 until 2040, and that it can carry nuclear weapons, (unless im mistaking) they can pose a very serious threat.

BTW scroll down the article to 2000 to present controversies. Look how many times Russia has used that plane to cause trouble.
  by: RyanB     02/13/2008 03:26 AM
the cuban missile crisis is very similar.

The problem with missiles in Cuba for the US was that they would not be able to respond to an attack.

the problem with a missile defense system for the Russians is that they would not be able to respond to an attack.

A missile defence system per se isn't bad for world peace, it is bad if only one power has it and that power has a history of aggression.

  Justifiable Nose Pinch
The NeoCon Regime has been blustering, bullying, and committing war crimes for nigh on eight years(20 actually). Wolfowitz, Perle, Zelikov, Lewis Libby, et al think they can affect murder, mayhem, torture and perjury, with absolute impunity. The forces of 'Good' in the world have had it up to here. Putin, Chavez, and hopefully a few more may be ready to test america's resolve. In the age of the hypersonic low altitude missile, nobody is going to walk out a winner. (Note: the SSN-22 Moskit is itching to test it's mettle against american warships. Outlook for US Fleet: Not so good.) Let's hope Chavez turns off the tap on US exports. Twist Bushies nose until it hurts. Note: If it werent for Admiral WmFallon US would have bombarded Iran some time ago. Without this "Patriot" america would be reeling from the economic impact of 'warcrime overextension'. And, his quote on GenPatraes is interesting, "Patreaus is an ass kissing little chickenshit" (Vulgar term necessary due to importance of speaker). so finally Thanks Bush family, we owe it all to you. Putin, Keep 'Em Flyin'!

  Seems to me...
...that the situation is going exactly as planned, according to our owners.

Kill most of us in a third world war while sipping the most expensive drink and eating the most expensive food and sitting in the most expensive chairs money can buy in perfect safety from any nuclear attack and any radioactive repercussions and see how much easier it would be to fence in your livestock and sheer them for all they're worth.
  by: Lagnar   02/13/2008 06:21 AM
Missiles were actually shipped into cuba because while America already had the ICBM technology the Russians did not, without parking some missiles right outside US soil there was no way to effectively launch a missile attack.

So although I see your point it is not correct as Russia was merely repositioning missiles to be able to respond to a US missile attack.

As far as the behaviour of the original story goes I think japan was well within their right to shoot them out of the sky, breaching international boundaries - especially when one considers the technology at hand to view said boundaries is just ridiculous.

by the US reaction to their overflight...
and the official American stance on the overflight:

  Pure posture
This crap goes on all the time. The two big boys on the block flexing and spewing a bit of testosterone. It is usually just that but sometimes gets a bit scary. Both leaders are just stupid enough that it could escalate if not careful. Last real event of note was the shooting of the South Korean passenger airline on the Russian side (it did have a belly fullof arms - I know because I made the 50cal machine guns that were on board). The US ws thumbing their nose at the Russians and daring them to shoot down a passenger jet. Recently we shot down a passenger jet in the Mediteranean also running arms. Not always safe being a passenger.

  <insert subject here>
First off they didn't attack the carrier. Secondly placing a missile defense shield in Poland is just as bad as putting nukes in Cuba. For those of you familiar, MAD is the only reason nukes are never deployed. It's the equivalent of having a device that shuts off all the guns in a country before you invade. As scary as it is to say this about Russia but, with America going the way of Nazi Germany, would you want them having the ability to instantly vaporize one of the only threats to their military?
