Kosovo Serbs Burn Border Crossings to Protest Independence

In the most serious incident since Kosovo declared independence (SN reported), Serbs have set fire to the Jarinje and Banja border crossings in the divided town of Mitrovica and Montenegro. About 1,000 Serbs were involved.

While the U.S., U.K., France, Germany and Italy have recognized the new state of Kosovo, Russia and China are concerned that the move will endanger regional stability. NATO peacekeepers have been brought in to help local authorities.

The Serbian parliament has passed a resolution condemning Kosovo's declaration, and Serbia has recalled ambassadors from some of the countries that have recognized Kosovo's independence.
