Student Sex Workers up 50% in Seven Years

Increasing costs of student life are driving increasing numbers of university students into prostitution a recent study by Kingston University has shown.

The average student is expected to spend over £33,000 for a three year course, and owe almost £15,000 at the end of it.
Workers can earn £900 for two nights' work, with their employers charging clients up to £500 an hour.

  by: Heresy   02/20/2008 01:57 PM
  Someone will say
That they should get a real job and magicly find a way to do full time university and full time work to pay the bills... I can feel it...
  by: RV3   02/20/2008 03:19 PM
So... students get jobs,
lonely men get jobs.
What seems to be the problem? :p

  Stupid kids
Sell weed, my dealer back in college was making 30 000$ a year being at school full time. :P

I think this problem is NOT just with the situation, but also with the individuals. If males are finding a way to make it through college, females should be too. Honestly, prostitution for people in debt is never going to go away, because it's always going to be easier to sell your body for sex than to work a regular job.

And people tend to choose the easiest path.

  And this just shows
How bad the current education system is in this country.

We have a 50% higher rate of prostitution, and around a 50% dropout rate in some areas!

The money is going to the wrong people.

So it looks like students in the UK have a 50/50 chance of becoming a sex worker or dropping out. What happen to the other 50%? :) lol

  yeah uni students
lets face it half of these girls probably just scrapped in and will still be repeating 1st year subjects in 5 years. I your the kind of person who is goign to succeed in life you will finish uni with a normal job, easy money for having no morals doesn't build the charater needed to succeed.

Guys get through uni with out laying on the backs. I thought the sexes were equal.

I studied uni in uk..
correct me if am wrong but the town center was filled with male and female students doing part jobs..
so males arent prefered over females
so why lose ur morals and enter the porn business..
i know student life is a bit expensive but there are alwayz other routes to take..

I know this is in the uk but...
This article could have been written for the US as well. I know that when I got out I was seriously in debt, even with scholarships. Looking over my debts it does look like around 5-6000 per year in debt, and I don't know anyone that got a bachelors in less than 5 years. I live in Las Vegas so there is a lot of opportunities for people to make a quick buck and I see people all the time going this route. Usually the guys sell drugs and the woman either become prostitutes or Strippers. I can see why they do it, even if I didn't. Doing something you don't like for 5 years to get out of school with no debts is not a bad deal. Heck, I worked fast food and hated every minute of it while in school. If I could have stripped my way through school I would have happily done it. I would have made more money and had more time to study. Wouldn't have prostituted myself though. Not because it's wrong but just to dangerous for my tastes.

  @Morals and Gender difference
Morals don't come into it. Prostitution is like any other job. You are being paid for a service.

The article says that both males and females are getting into it. Also, men have a harder time getting into prostitution than women and make less. The men, and women, that do buckle down and work through college just end up owing more when they get out. It's not that they are better because they didn't prostitute themselves, they are just getting out of school and being seriously in debt.

  Filling a Job Position
Why's it everyone criticizes the prostitutes but never the customer? These students are making up to £500/hr; somebody has to be paying that money. They're filling positions in a service that obviously needs employees.
