Milky Way is More Than 70,000,000,000,000,000 Miles Wide

Scientists at the University of Sydney in Australia have determined that the Milky Way, the galaxy in which Earth resides, is more than 12,000 light years, or 70,000,000,000,000,000+ miles, thick, not the 6,000 light years as previously thought.

Professor Gaensler and associates, Dr Greg Madsen, Dr Shami Chatterjee and PhD student Ann Mao, were working on ideas about the size of the galaxy and decided to calculate it for themselves.

They were able to determine the size of the Milky Way by downloading data from the internet and calculating it in a spreadsheet.

  That's wide!

That's 70 quadrillion miles. In comparison, there are 70 sextillion, or 7x10^22 stars.

If you drove a car from one side of the Milky Way to the other traveling at 100 MPH, it would take you nearly 80,000,000,000 years to get to the other side.

Even if you were in the Space Shuttle traveling at its average speed of 17,000 MPH, you're still looking at 470,000,000+ years.

Thats wider than Sally Struther's ass!
By comparison, her ass is 69,999,999,999,999,999 Miles Wide

  So if i take

a piss at one end, how can i calculate how many years it would take to fall on the "aliens" on the other end..?

  Correction: thick, not wide.

Our Galaxy is 12,0000 light-years _thick_. Its diameter is app. 100,000 light-years containing 200 billion to 400 billion stars.

100,000 light-years is 587,862,537,318,300,000 miles. So, a car travelling at 100mph would take 671,075,955,842 years to get to the other side. If our own solar system was only 1 inch wide, our Galaxy would be a disk of app. 2,600 miles in diameter. There are over 100 billion galaxies in our (visible) Universe.

Ok this upsets me a little

"They were able to determine the size of the Milky Way by downloading data from the internet and calculating it in a spreadsheet."

Ummm last time I checked, shouldn't you be making your own measurements instead of "downloading it off the interweb"? where did they get this data from? Myspace?

Uphill both ways! In the snow! On bloody stumps, do doubt...

Back in my day I had to walk that far every morning at 3AM just to get to school, or I was beaten by a yardstick by the teacher until the cows came home.

@Fonzo: Correction: thick, not wide. or is it?

If 120000 is stated as thick & 100000 as diameter.
Wouldn't that make the roles reversed.
