Man Sues PD After Officer Gets His Gun and Taser Mixed Up

Canada: Daniel Hammond is suing the police department after an officer accidentally shot him in the abdomen during an arrest in late 2005. Constable Mike Miller, the officer who shot him, resigned in January.

Hammond had reportedly been causing a disturbance outside a restaurant and resisted when police attempted to arrest him. Miller reached for his Taser to subdue Hammond but came up with his Glock instead and shot the 25-year-old.

At that time the police were using a Taser that is very similar in feel to the police firearm. Since that time the force has switched to a Taser with a different feel. The government in British Columbia is currently holding an inquiry into Tasers.

  Why

oh why would you design a taser similar in feel to a gun and give both things to the same police officer? In a panic, who knows what the police officer would pull out, as this example shows. Schoolboy error.

  The BC incident

British Colmbia has a problem because few month ago they tasered to death a polish tourist in the secure area in the airport.

The guy was 'lost' in the secure area for 10 hours and could not speak English. When he finally lost his patience and got rowdy, Four of BC's finest attacked him and subdued him with a taser.

He did not react well to the taser and died. IMO he was hungry and dehydrated after a long trans-atlantic flight in which he probably consumed alcohol which dehydrated him even more. Then he lingered for 10 hours more in the airport with no food and minimal water.

IMO he was tired and hungry and thirsty and his body could not handle taser-juice.

  Why would you design...?

Because the people that run Taser have a Confidence/Competence ratio that exceeds unity. In other words, their confidence exceeds their competence. Result? One mistake after another.

Someday, there will be a Michael Moore film about Taser...

  2003 Stella award winner.

Check out the Stella award winner for 2003. Officer Marcy Noriega of California shot and killed a man with her gun thinking it was a Taser. The city sued Taser arguing it was their fault.

I think Yibs put this in forums,I tried looking for it to link here.

My friend was attacked years ago with this gas, it took the skin off his face, they did it for nothing, I was there, it was about colour that was obvious, we took the cop to court but he just got off as usual. My friend died a year later.

  It could have been worse….

He could have gotten his gun and his weapon mixed up and had anal sex with the poor guy.

Could be because this wasn't in America.

Actually, if you want to get technical, it did happen in America, North America. The US is only part of America, not the entirety of it. ;)

Seriously though, I hope he wins.
