Australia: Port Stephens Council has spent $10,000 stacking two shipping containers in place of twenty trees which were illegally cut down. Council suspects that local home owners who gained improved water views from the felling are responsible.
Local residents have complained bitterly that the council is treating them like children. They say that there is no proof any of them did it and have suggested that it may have been the work of drunks.
"We've told people that chopping down trees is selfish and criminal, but that hasn't worked, so we've had to go to the next level," said Mike Trilgar from council. He also indicated that the containers were there partly to protect new saplings.
