Ebay Australia Customers Now Forced to Use Paypal

eBay Australia has announced that all items will have to be paid for using a Paypal account. Alastair MacGibbon, the trust & safety director at eBay said: "You're four times less likely to have a problem on eBay if you pay with PayPal"

Paypal, an eBay subsidiary, will charge between 1.1% and 2.4% for each mandated credit card payment. The changes come into effect in June, from May 21st all sellers must offer Paypal. MacGibbon expects a "small but vocal minority" to oppose the changes.

He said, "eBay is no longer willing to stand aside and allow payment methods on the site that are proven to be less safe for consumers." Other eBay sites will evaluate the changes and make their own choice on whether use the new system.

  Considering eBay own PayPal

this is hardly surprising.

As a buyer, I only ever buy from sellers who accept PayPal, it's convenient and safer than some other methods of payment. However, as a seller, I always offer the option of cheque or cash on collection, although most people choose to pay by PayPal, if I don't sell through PayPal I don't have to pay PayPal fees on top of the eBay fees.

If eBay are going to force it's customers to use PayPal, then they should make the seller aware of the full fee upfront, before they sell their item, rather than wait until they receive payment via PayPal only to see how much of the money is going into PayPal fees. You pay one fee for listing the item, another for selling the item, then another for being paid. It should be a lot more transparent to the seller, rather than hitting them with different fees at each stage of the process.

  More like Gaypal L!!O!!L!!

Anyway back in the day when I used eBay for something, I was constantly annoyed because everyone either only shipped within their own country or demanded that you use Paypal.

Or was in China and wanted titanic shipping fee.

Actually one time a seller asked me to buy a type of money order that didn't exist, that was fun too.
