Doctors in California have performed 17 successful long distance operations on patients halfway around the world in Rome. The technology could even lead to lifesaving operations being performed right on a battlefield.
The team was able to use technology including surgical robots and videoconferencing to perform operations including kidney repair and removal, despite being thousands of miles away from their patients.
"If robots improve, and we are really able to do all kinds of surgery, you could see a single surgeon sitting at a console switching from one surgery to another around the world," one researcher said.
