Serial Deer Killer Is A Vegetarian

Portland Oregon has had a rash of deer killings in a certain area over the last 2 years and police say they finally found the killer. On Friday state police arrested a 60 year old vegetarian who has admitted to the crime.

Ronald Livermore would take his 22 caliber rifle which he outfitted with a homemade silencer and shine a light in the deers eyes before shooting them. He then left the carcasses along roadsides to rot.

Police say a majority of the deer killed were pregnant or had just given birth. Livermore faces 8 charges which include tampering with evidence, waste of deer, hunting while suspended and aggrivated animal abuse.

  Yep

I hunt and use what I kill, this guy is just a POS and the fact he claims to be a vegitarian is just sick.

  What a waste

of deer. It's obvious that he kills for the pleasure if you really can ever get pleasure from doing such a thing. To claim that you are vegetarian and kill these animals almost smacks of sadism,

I don't get how he can say he is vegetarian

So yeah, he doesn't eat the deer, but he does kill them!

Most people who are vegetarian are not that way because they just don't like the taste of meat, it's out of principle because they don't believe that the animals should be killed just so we can eat them. But clearly this guy thinks it's ok to kill animals for fun, which is so much worse than killing them for food.

I couldn't kill anything, I'm almost vegetarian, in the sense that I still eat chicken. I'm planning on phasing that out of my diet too eventually, but it won't be easy. I only stopped eating mammals in September or October (I've never eaten fish, don't like it) so it might be a while before I can phase out chicken too.

  What a twisted story

The source says he is primarily vegetarian. Which actually means he is not a vegetarian.

By the way, being vegetarian does not necessarily mean being compassionate towards other beings as there are many other reasons for being vegetarian.

I also don't really see a difference between killing for the thrill of taking life or to please one's palette. Although killing for the thrill of killing is probably a much more powerful action than killing to please taste buds.

@Tabby: Depending on where you live, you'll probably be able to buy meat substitute products which are free of animal protein. Some are like eating bits of cardboard, some are good enough to fool non vegetarians.

You can get stuff like vegetarian bacon substitute, then there's always stuff like Quorn, Tofu etc. Generally I don't bother with meat substitutes, although in summer I will have to get some vege sausages, how else can I have a barbecue? :-/

I never ate that much meat other than chicken anyway, which is why it was pretty easy to cut it out of my diet. Stopping eating chicken will be harder though, I won't be able to eat anything from my favourite Chinese takeaway anymore, stir-fried vegetables just doesn't cut it!

  I'm vegetarian...

...and I won't even kill a spider, even though they terrify me. I get a glass and some paper and put them outside. Can't understand how or why anyone would get a thrill out of killing or harming anything.

@mousejunkie & TabbyCool
The range of products that are now available for vegetarians is amazing. I've never eaten meat so I never had to give it up but when my parents became veggies there was a much more limited choice and it must have been tough.
