Portugal: Chief Inspector Goncalo Amaral, the man who previously headed the Madeleine McCann investigation, is facing a possible jail term after being charged with negligence and perjury over child murder investigation he was previously involved in.
Another four officers were charged over the same case. One was charged with fabricating a document, and the other three will stand trial for torture. It is understood that all five plan to deny the charges when their trials begin in autumn.
According to sources in Portugal it is not impossible that Amaral could keep his job even if he is convicted. A spokesperson for the McCanns has called for an external inquiry into how Portugese authorities handled the entire case.
