US West Coast Shipping Closed in Protest of War

All shipping on the west coast of the United States was brought to a halt by a massive war protest by dockworkers. Terminal operators have acknowledged that a day long protest has closed the ports.

Thousands of dock workers refused to come to work today leaving truckers and ship crews wondering what to do next. The one day strike coincides with May Day and shipping is expected to resume tomorrow.

Nearly all cargo from Asia comes through the West coast ports.

  @dock workers
Next we'll have all pilots strike.
Then all train operators.
Then all ship crews.
Should be enough professions to have a 1 day strike every day of the year,
that oughtta stop any more wars from happening.

  Really good
to see the people standing together for what is right. Or indeed against what is wrong.

Sadly I imagine they'll all be on no-fly lists by tomorrow. Still, it's good to see people stand together for what they believe in, especially when I agree with them ;-)

  Good for them
Nice to see that some workers realize that they are the ones that hold the power for change!

  I wonder
if they advertised it then the whole of America may shut down in protest of the war. Would not they take notice then?! Something needs to be done here too in protest.

  Yes guts at last
This does make me feel better about the people in this world.
Good for them!

  I say we all...
... just take one day of the year off... meet in a giant field in the spring... and proceed with the wildest orgy mankind has ever created.

Make love not war!

Wonder if this can be considered...
a terrorist act.. They shut down a major shipping hub, cause all sorts of delays (both in and out bound), If this goes one for more than a day then they are committing economic distress.. I'm sure there are lots of legal people that would gladly cross the line for 50% to 80% of what the current workers are getting paid. And if this is the union doing.. the go after the union too for conspiracy to commit Terrorism.

  My Hats Off To Them
They had to ignore a court order that forced them to work. Brave people standing up for thier principles.

Gentlemen and Ladies of the dock workers unions: thank you.

I sympathize with them.

In order for it to be considered an act of terrorism one of them would have had to be carrying a joint

  Hats off to them indeed!
At least someone is making some noise.

No, Cheney would say, "SO?!"

Good story except "All shipping" is a pretty gross exaggeration ;)

Pacific Maritime was the only company involved, and there's several larger Ocean freight carriers for the west coast.

Kudos to these people. Bravely done!

... so much for the neo-con argument that nobody is really bothered enough about the war to do something about it.

  good for them but..
shame on them to...

god for them for doing it, in what they believe in..

but shame on them for thinking a one day strike would solve anything... its sort of like students having a walkout at school... if you intended to resume normal operation before changes are made you've accomplished nothing... other than a feel-good sensation of self expression.

personally... i think if you want to protest the war, refuse to pay taxes... or refuse to pay whatever percentage of the tax budget so towards the war and include a note saying they will only being receiving taxes for domestic purposes... not to be the warmongers of the middle east.

a one day strike accomlplishes little, any longer and they'll just call in some scabs and you might lose your job.. and of course almost everyone is slave to goverment via employment, many people couldn't fiancially go a month without work before going broke... IE most people can't afford to strike in protest.
