Mother Shoots Daughter Over One-Dollar Bet
 

28-year old Angelique R. Vandeburg was charged with intentional child abuse after she shot her 8-year old daughter in the thigh with a BB gun so that she could win a $1.00 bet from her boyfriend.

According to the young girl, the mother and her boyfriend had been heavily drinking one night when the boyfriend bet Vandeburg $1.00 that she couldn't shoot her daughter, and handed her the BB gun.

The BB round didn't go into the young girl's thigh but bounced off her pants, and even struck the girl's 7-year old brother, who wasn't injured. The BB shot hurt the girl so much, she said she couldn't walk.

BB Guns aren't just toys anymore, there are some very high powered products on the market. Relative in power to that of a .22, so much as to even shoot this caliber (and .25) of a bb/pellet. What BB guns lack from gunpowder firearms is range.

Some BB/pellet gun can be very nasty. Here in canada they are considered firearm if they shoot faster than 495 feet/second,and i saw some pellet gun raging from 200 to 850 feet second. These things can be deadly just because they don't go boom doesn't mean they can't do any damage.

that i keep by my back door, for shooting cans/etc will run around 1400 FPS (feet per second).. a .22lr will do around 1,000-1,700 fps. a .44 magnum does around 1,300-1,600 fps.

the days of the ol' red ryder BB gun (280 fps) that will barely knock a can down are long gone. the pellet gun i have will put a pellet thru a 3/8 inch (10mm) piece of plywood, no problems.

BB guns and pellet guns are not the same thing in the US. They are two separate entities. Pellet guns can be as powerful (or more so) as a .22 cal rifle. BB guns can still put an eye out. ;)

Pellet guns shoot a .17 caliber pellet if I'm not mistaken, the same caliber as some high power, scoped rifles. Like was already mentioned the only difference is the gunpowder. They can do some serious damage nowadays.

when i was younger, i have been shot with a bb gun and hit, literally, with a bb gun. out of the two, i think i would prefer to be shot with a bb gun.

In my youth (58 years ago) I had a Daisy one-pump BB gun that was quite powerful. The current Red Ryder will still kill robins and small animals. Some pump guns could be pumped up to match .22 rifle velocities...Benjamin made one like that. The eyes receive permanent injury from all BB guns.

You can't blame alcohol for all the stupidity in the world. These people were already idiots, the fact that they were drunk possibly made them worse, but they were clearly not that smart (or caring) to begin with.

Seriously, shooting your (or anyone else's) 8-year-old child for a $1 bet is pretty low. For any amount of money it's not exactly good parenting, but for $1? That's like 55p or something in UK money, you can barely buy a can of Coke for that!
