Botnet Hacker Jailed in US

Robert Matthew Bentley, a hacker convicted of hijacking hundreds of computers and thus creating a botnet, has been jailed for over three years in the United States. He must pay US$65,000 in fines, and will be subject to supervision after release.

Bentley used the botnet to attack other computers and install programmes on the infects PCs that caused endless pop-up adverts. He was caught after Newell Rubbermaid reported an intrusion on its networks to the CCU.

An investigation was launched in 2006 which included the FBI, the US Secret Service and Sophos, a computer security company. The intrusion of the Rubbermaid network cost the company US$150,000 to repair.

  I somehow doubt

'The intrusion of the Rubbermaid network cost the company US$150,000 to repair.'

What they mean is it cost that much to fix a flaw that was always present and didnt have the capacity to run a network wide kill on the adware.

Wonder how much Sophos are pocketing?

  Good Grief

  This is why

I get so preachy with my friends and relatives about securing their computers. It's a bit dramatic, but if you're running an insecure computer, you really could be unknowingly aiding a botnet attack. And the seriousness of that goes way beyond Rubbermaid -- there have been suspected botnet attacks on U.S. defense computers.

It goes way beyond pop ups.

  Ah

I would say that all of those "defense" computers, where not ones linked directly to any military hardware. I would say that the ones of national import are on a closed loop type of system. It is like the jailing of Kevin Mitnick, which was one messed up deal. America's justice system at work, NOT.

They should be put on a road gang for 10 years, so they can be doing something useful.

  *rolls eyes*

You know, back in the old days it was common practice for hacks being pulled off to actually cause some serious damage.
Any typical virus in the 80's and early 90's was known to erase data and quite commonly, even physically destroy computer hardware. (ie, the many strains forced HD head-parking virii).
I agree.. $150k to "repair" this crap is beyond absurd.

LOL! You are absolutely correct!
When this jerk enters prison he will be introduced to Prison Football.

He starts out as a Tight End.
He ends up as a Wide Receiver.

Yeah. Back in time I created a program to do just that. A loop that contained a command to push the drive heads beyond their limits, 100,000 times.
