Prince William was made the 1000th Knight of the Garter by his Grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle today. His Father, his brother, and his girlfriend, Kate Middleton attended.
The Royal Order of the Garter, Established in 1348, may be bestowed by the British monarch upon anyone she chooses without seeking approval from government. It is mostly given to people for service to the crown.
The attire of the knights is an ostrich plumed hat, velvet robes, and a deep blue velvet garter with the words "Honi soit qui mal y pense," or "shame upon him who thinks evil upon it."
