Hero: Man Sacrifices His Life to Save Wife and Friend From Blizzard

Washington State: 31-year-old Eduard Burceag from Romania has preserved the lives of his wife and a close friend by lying over the top of them in a trench after the trio were caught in the open on Mount Rainier in a blizzard.

Despite what one National Park Service ranger described as the worst blizzard he had ever seen and 110km/h winds, Burceag refused to trade places. His actions saved the lives of both his companions but rescuers were unable to revive him.

Burceag's brother was unsurprised by his heroics, saying: "I'm sure he would do that. He knew very well that his children needed a lot of their mother and that was the main thing in his life."

  Wow

This is quite the happily depressing story. Kudos to him. If there's an afterlife, I hope he's well rewarded.

I was just camping at the base of Mt Rainier a few weeks ago. While the base is nothing, hardly even any snow, its freaky to think that not much higher up its life threatening.

Why does this seem so completely odd?

Someone help me understand please?

  I wonder...

How many of us would be willing to do the same given the like situation, I THINK I would have everyone take like 20 minute intervals, everyone should live like that... But Im a southern boy, so dunno...

If he aint in heaven then we have no hopes ladies and gents.

yeah I'm a bit confused by this myself... why not just take turns so they could all live? It doesn't make any sense to me.

Perhaps he felt that taking turns would cause too much body heat loss on the part of the other two survivors, causing them to die as well.

  Great Love, Great Sacrifice

"Greater love hath no man than this, than that he lay down his life for his friends.

  Eh...

Yeah, I believe they did something like this in March of the Penguins... except the penguins were smart enough to trade places so none of them died.

"Mr Burceag refused to swap places when winds topped 110km/hr.

"In doing so, he probably saved their lives," Mount Rainier National Park spokesman Kevin Bacher said. "

Also, the wife was incoherent when they found her. If she had been exposed to the winds, chances are she would have died.

Not to fight about something that for which very little evidence is available, but...

The source says the assistant was only "assisted back to camp", so he was probably fine enough to have switched places and to have saved his friend's life. Being "incoherent" doesn't mean almost dead. His wife could've been "incoherent" because the reality that her husband died very slowly while resting on top of her was a little too much to take. The source makes no mention of what kind of treatment she received after being rescued (ie - No mention of severe hypothermia, frostbite, etc), so I'm going to assume psychological incoherence and say she was probably physically able to take a 20 minute turn on top. The Park Spokesman's statement should not be misconstrued to mean that his sacrifice was the ONLY way the other two survived. If they had taken turns, he may have said, "By doing so, they saved each other's lives."

While it was certainly his decision to kill himself for his family, I hardly see that this was the only way for survival. Why we should label him as a hero for not thinking about it a little and taking turns, which very likely would've saved his everyone's lives.
