Rush Limbaugh Signs an 8-Year Contract worth 400 Million

Rush Limbaugh the conservative talk show host signed an 8-year contract with Clear Channel Communications worth US$400 million. Rush's show airs daily for 3 hours on 600 AM radio stations with an estimated 20 million listeners a week.

Rush is credited with single handedly saving AM radio and is praised by Republicans and Conservatives for providing an alternative to major networks like MSNBC and CNN whom people accuse of having a liberal bias.

Once regarded by President Ronald Regan as the "Number One Voice for conservatism in out country" Rush's earnings put American network broadcasters to shame, making more then the 4 most famous news anchors combined.

ASSESS this news: BLOCK this news. Reason:
goes to show you that conservative talk radio is FAR dead unlike air america and NPR and that rushes listeners keep growing and growing.

  Yeah, how laudable.
[Limbaugh] told the New York Times: "First and foremost, I'm a businessman. My first goal is to attract the largest possible audience so I can charge confiscatory ad rates.

"I happen to have great entertainment skills, but that enables me to sell airtime."

You can buy a lot of painkillers with that.

Americans is falling fast. Let's how it will take to drop from the 80s to the 70s.

Anyone here ever actually listen to rush?
The show, not soundbites or clips from you tube. Most of his time is spent saying republican politicians suck, and that they failed conservatives. Whats so bad about that?
I love the guy... don't always agree with him, but hes entertaining as hell.

  Oh yea,
Isn't this story like 2 weeks old? I have known about this for some time now.
  by: TheWordOfKarl   07/08/2008 10:04 AM
Far more money in selling ignorance & hot air than I ever imagined.

Should have spent half that amount on medicare to keep the target audience of 65+ older on life support to keep listening in.

$400,000,000 over 8 years
$50,000,000 per year
$1,000,000 per week (2 weeks vacation)
20,000,000 listeners per week
$0.05 per listener per week
Everybody that reads this owes me a nickel.

The 'Jackass' movies pulled in 140 million smackaroonies and love him, hate him, or hate him more, Rush (I don't personally listen to him) entertains with information concerning the political system. This may get some people thinking about and possibly involved in trying to improve things (politically). Jackass pretty much produces Darwin Award candidates. (Not saying there's not an argument for improvement there also).
  by: crosimoto     07/08/2008 01:15 PM
I used to think the same way you do about jackass, but lately I realized it's crucial to improving the gene pool.
  by: silentrage   07/08/2008 02:54 PM
so what if the story is 2 weeks old?
  by: cray0la     07/08/2008 04:42 PM
  @Cros, cray0la
Cros: Thing is, Jackass has a disclaimer before its stars do stupid things telling people not to do them. Limbaugh does the opposite, deliberately creating a cult of personality to lead people in partisanship beneficial to him but poisonous to our national discourse. There are plenty of things people consider entertaining these days, but popularity alone doesn't make them praiseworthy.

Cray0la: 2 week-old news isn't exactly new anymore. I thought there was some kind of guideline on this in a FAQ, but I couldn't find it.

Another excuse to post this video!
  by: l´anglais     07/08/2008 07:42 PM
isnt a rule about it so i do not see what the problem is with posting a story even if its "old"
its a talked about subject even yet today.
it wasnt SN reported anyways so why not post a story.
there are often alot of storys posted up a while after i hear about them.
  by: cray0la     07/09/2008 01:44 AM
that video is just dumb.
it talks about how his ratings are going down but in reality there going up something you and the liberal left wing crackpots has a problem realizing. something you people sit and twiddle your thumbs about.
  by: cray0la     07/09/2008 01:52 AM
Actually, one negative rating option above is "News Out of Date." While I cannot find a definition of this rating, that this reason exists is proof that old news is discouraged.

Now, as opposed to thumb-twiddling, do you expect some kind of culture war to break out over that? Rush is, in fact, mere entertainment programming. While I still think he and his ilk should be forbidden from calling themselves news men, and I do feel that he sets such a poor example of debate for those who take him seriously that they lose the ability to argue a point in real life, he's no more a threat than Howard Stern.
"The study found that Mr. Limbaugh’s share of radio listeners was greatest during commercials, beating his share during on-air segments by 0.18 percentage point.

"Warren Kurtzman, the vice president of Coleman, said that Mr. Limbaugh’s audience tuned in during commercials so as not to miss the beginning of each segment. 'His shares at the beginning of each hour are tremendous,' Mr. Kurtzman said.

"The study also found that Mr. Limbaugh did worst during minutes in which he was expressing approval, with a 5.43 percent average share of listeners. He had 5.71 percent of listeners when expressing negative opinions and 5.81 percent when he was neutral. 'People are tuning in to hear his beefs with the world,' Mr. Kurtzman said."

In short, Limbaugh's really just a very successful shock-jock. People tune out when the fire-and-brimstone stop, not caring about his opinions, merely his bluster and bravado.

I'd say that 2 weeks (old) is pretty much at the limit. However, if anyone has a problem with the age of the story, feel free to PM me and I'll get a second opinion and post the decision.

  And taxes
Another reason SS taxes should be levied on all
earnings earned.
  by: wvcoalminer   07/09/2008 08:16 PM
  Social Security
was designed to be a supplement to a person's retirement savings. It was never intended to BE a person's retirement. It was also designed to be an individual's retirement not a retirement pool. That is why after about $97,000 of earnings in a given tax year there are no more SS taxes withheld. The reasoning behind that is that a person who makes that kind of moola shouldn't need any supplemental retirement funds. They have the earning potential to supply a healthy retirement for themselves. What you are talking about is re-distribution of wealth and it sounds really good to me on the surface being a broke recent college grad with student loans out my @ss. However, re-distribution of wealth policies do not encourage a person to better their self. Why should I go into debt to get an education when I can sit at home eating Cheetos turning myself into my own interpretation of what Jabba the Hutt would look like on my sofa and have someone else turn over their hard earned living to me. People, like water and electricity, tend to take the path of least resistance. If we provide a method by which a person can lay about all day and not have to worry about their next meal, they WILL take it. I on the other hand stand to be keeping their lard @sses topped off with Jolt Cola and Cheetos while watching their next door neighbor's re-run appearance on the Maury Povich show denying the parentage of their own children. Raising the Social Security wage cap is about as smart as raising the minimum wage. It will not raise the poor out of their miserable lives. If they were as miserable as they claim to be, they would be doing something about it instead of whining about it.

If you were referring with IQ to intelligence: when were U.S.A.'ns smart?

Albert Einstein: German.
Nikola Tesla: Croatian.
Issac Newton: British
Michael Faraday: British
Alexander Bell: Scottish
So on and so on...
Even Jefferson was born in an British colony making him a British citizen.

So, where is the great U.S.A'n intelligence:? I think it's a national myth, don't you? I think that the U.S.A. is full of merchants and consumers - both of which to become, you don't need great intelligence. You just need a combination of perseverance, moral flexibility, and an unjustified sense civilizational superiority. This obviously applies to all colonial settlements that later became nation-states.

Rush Limbaugh is a whore. Now, if you like whores that has nothing to do with intelligence. It has to do more with what attracted people to migrate to the colonies in the first place: money. Or should I say: the pursuit of happiness.

Yeah, the latter sounds so much more a lofty goal.

I hope this worthless piece of shit is shot.
I see billboards around town that say "Rush is right!" and it makes me sick. I'm scared to think of what the world will become if people listen to this hypocritical tool.
  by: amir8500   07/11/2008 10:51 PM
Haha so some of the members here are left wing liberal crackpots eh, well im no liberal in no republican because its dumb to choose a side before knowing all aspects of an issue.

All this proves with rush getting 400M is that the listeners of Rush are a valueable group to market crap to because they will buy it thats why he gets 400M not because he is brilliant.

To anyone who suggests that he is brilliant I redirect you to his harsh comments about drug abusers when in fact he as (probably still is) hooked on pain killers.

Again, thank you I am done here.

People are listening - 20 million of them, every day - that's a pretty big base wouldn't you say?
by: Ignorance Police   07/13/2008 04:02 PM
I've heard he is losing his hearing
so will he even last 8 years?
He'll go "huh?", "huh?"

I guess he can't stand his own voice...
