Mom Gets High On - Baby Smiles?

"It's got to be like crack" says mother Katrina Lyons, a Houston science teacher and subject in a research project by Scientists at the Baylor College of Medicine. The study focused on the brain reactions of mothers' response to thier smiling babies.

Assistant professor Lane Strathearn, studied the brain reactions of 28 1st-time moms, noting when mothers see their baby smiling, pleasure receptors in the brain are activated. These receptors are usually associated with food, sex or drug addiction.

Although it makes sense that there would be such a bond between mother and child, what's not known is if these brain reactions are instinctive or are they part of socialization. A study observing this effect with fathers has yet to be conducted.

  Ugh...

I want my money back. Those baby smiles were BS. They were mostly baby powder. Am I the only person who thinks there is NOTHING cute about babies? They look like hairless rats. Once they hit about 3 or 4, then they become cute or ugly kids. Until then, they're all gross.

Actually I would be interested for them to repeat the study several years later after these same mothers see their children smile. I can guarantee that sensation would be coupled with a feeling of dread at "WTF did that child do now?!?"

I was referring strictly to their appearance. I know people are all about their babies. They feel the need to show me pictures of them and ask if I want to hold them although the sight of a baby makes me somewhat ill.

  no refund

sorry Amir but you knew you didn't like babies before you saw the product.
I do however agree with Daev: I bet there are different receptors fired when these kids start getting into mischief.
But all in all the idea was to try and report some 'good' news for a change.

Yeah but I'm referring to the quality of the product. You can't mix in 50% baby powder and have it be 100% baby smile. I'm just a reseller. Whether or not I use the product shouldn't determine whether or not I'm entitled to a refund for a smile cut 50-50 with powder. I'm telling everyone I know. You'll never sell baby smiles in this town again!

:| OK, there's really no point to this. Just fun to argue the validity of my refund request I suppose.

  Wow....

...so when a mother sees her baby smile, it maks her happy and therefore activates pleasure receptors in their brains?

Groundbreaking. Who was head of the study? Dr John Obvious?

I wonder if the same women would also feel sad if their babies died? We need a study instantly.

  Lighten up Francis

Actually the receptors activate first, thus the happiness, and not just any 'ol 'I got an "A" on my report card happiness';
If someone asked you what would you rather do, have sex or look at your baby smile...or how about eating your favorite meal, or look at your baby smile or even experience the effects of an opiate, or look at your baby smile.
...The answer may seem obvious to you ,but the Mom (according to this study) may very well pick the baby smile. It's obvious that you learn to enjoy a good meal, as not all food taste good to you. You learn to enjoy a good romp in the hay and if you're into that sort of thing, you learn which drugs effect you in a way that keeps you wanting more of 'em. Is this whole baby thing learned, or is it instinct? I beg to differ, it may not be that obvious. Just some 'food' for thought.
