Julie Lake, 50, the daughter of a World War 2 veteran has been convicted of assault after protecting a war memorial which was subject to months of vandalism. The police did nothing to prevent the vandalism but did arrest Mrs Lake when she tried.
Mrs Lake confronted the children responsible for the destruction, hitting one round the ear and throwing a BMX bike into the road after one was ridden through flower beds at the memorial. She was charged with assault and criminal damage.
A gang of 25 jeering kids had surrounded Mrs Lake and shouted "You can't touch us, we're 15, we can do what the f*** we like.". When questioned in court about the memorial, one child said "It means nothing to me..".
