Pope Benedict XVI Begins 10-day Australia Visit

Pope Benedict XVI arrived at a military air base on Sydney's outskirts after a 20+ hour flight from Rome, his longest thus far. He plans on leading hundreds of thousands of pilgrims at the Roman Catholic church's World Youth Day festival on Thursday.

When asked about the environment, he said There is a need to "wake up consciences, We have to give impulse to rediscovering our responsibility and to finding an ethical way to change our way of life."

With this trip, he hopes to help in healing wounds caused by the clergy sexual abuse scandal. Stating that he would work for "healing and reconciliation with the victims" of sexual abuse by Catholic clergy there "just as I did in the United States"
