Church Sponsored Teen Gun Giveaway Canceled

Windsor Hills Baptist Church of Oklahoma has canceled its giveaway of a semiautomatic assault rifle at its weekend youth conference because one of the organizers injured his foot. The gun is a prize in the weekend's shooting competition.

The church’s youth pastor, Bob Ross, says “We have 21 hours of preaching and teaching throughout the week,I don’t want people thinking ‘My goodness, we’re putting a weapon in the hand of somebody that doesn’t respect it who are then going to go out..

and kill, That’s not at all what we’re trying to do.” The gun, which cost $800 will be given away next year.

  Sounds like a great idea.
It teaches kids responsibility and scares the crap out of liberals.

Me thinks the news is playing fast and loose with the term "semi-automatic assault rifle" as an assault rifle is by definition one capable of fully automatic fire; hence, illegal. KOCO however was never considered the most accurate of Oklahoma City's news stations.

W: It's attitudes like that which make it hard for some of us to defend the continued existence of guns in society. Is there something you read in the source that indicates that the winning kid will be taught how to use it? Because without that, it seems to me that simply giving a kid a gun teaches them nothing of responsibility, an assumption as sensible as saying that handing people money will solve the problem of poverty.

M: That's really a common misnomer for the civilian versions of true assault rifles. Since the source says nothing about the prize being illegal, I'd say the paper's just made a common mistake in language.

  Meanwhile, down the street...
the Pentacostal church was giving away a sack full of rattle snakes.

A gun is designed to kill?

So, when Moses came down the mountain with those commandments, including if I remember correctly, "thou shalt not kill", surely that means that killing is against God's will? Why is a church of all places giving away a tool specifically designed to perform an act against God's will?

That's what I love about these religious types. It's all straight forward for them, even when they're doing the opposite of what they claim to believe.

Now an other American will be able to say with true conviction.
"Its ma gawd given raaght to carry a gorne". and "Ahmm a honter".

What a dumb f*cking congregation!

It's worth noting that a number of translations will mention that commandment as "Thou shalt not murder." That's significant, especially when the Bible itself calls for killing sometimes.

Who would Jesus blow away? nt

The gun was a prize in the shooting competition. So, as this wasacompetition to see who could shoot the best, I would assume that they would know how to use the weapon safely.

Also, Whilst the commandment is not to murder, There are justified reasons for killing. In order to understand Mosaic law, you have to take Leviticus with the 10 commandments in Exodus.

Aw, darn. And there was the potential...
to have a whole less nutcase bible-thumpers in the world. Guess we'll have to wait another
year for that headline...

  Aw Shucks
This really sucks.

So when it comes to OTHER cultures you are probably willing to accept some customers which are extremely not normal in western society? Come on. Your bashing two groups of people whom have principals which are positive for society. Now, it is debatable how effective religious groups and competitive shooting organizations are ate bettering society but come on, what have you done?

" this wasacompetition to see who could shoot the best, I would assume that they would know how to use the weapon safely."

Perhaps...but I think to say giving the winner a gun is putting the cart before the horse in terms of responsiblity.

As for murder/killing, that was my point - Maxx criticized Christians for approval of killing, but Christianity doesn't necessarily forbid all killing, just murder.

Killing, slavery and regeim change is godly
Leviticus 20:9
If anyone curses his father or mother, he must be put to death.

20:10 If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife—with the wife of his neighbor—both the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death.

20:13 If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death.

Deuteronomy 22:20-1 If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the girl’s virginity can be found, she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done a disgraceful thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father’s house.

Deuteronomy 7:1-2 When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess and drives out before you many nations . . . then you must destroy them totally. Make no treaty with them, and show them no mercy.

Leviticus 25:44-45
Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property.

Exodus 21:7 King James Bible
And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant...[what would be a good price these days]

My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does he and his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

Your comment 'in jest' is noted but if you're not a Christian, I would think that you would choose to run for the hills; In the Inquisition or Crusades, Chistians were'nt killing ...each other.

Now if you've ever lived in OK, you'd know that they are ALL about the SOONERS and hunting season (not necessarily in that order). Fathers teach their sons how to hunt hunting and gun safety at early ages. And this church has been doing it for a while. And its still church, people who hate church and all they stand for, simply dont' show up, (gun or no gun).

  they organize a shooting contest
to get people to their prayers? And plan to give a deadly assault weapon to the winner?

I am stunned. Does the Pope know about this?
  by: luana1980     07/17/2008 12:44 AM
They organize a shooting contest to provide entertainment. To some people, shooting is fun (I count myself amongst that lot).

As to "Giving a deadly assault weapon to the winner", how would it be any different than giving a car (asside from the price)? A car is a deadly assault weapon in the hands with the motive, or an operator who is untrained in its safe use.

Does the Pope know about this? Baptists are about as faraway from the pope as you can get. Shouldn't matter though, they each think the other is going to hell anyway, so I doubt that either cares what the other is doing.

Are comparing apples to pineapples. The primary purpose of a motor vehicle is transportation, the primary purpose of a gun is to kill.

For clarification, I have no opinion on this, just pointing out the flaw in your logic.
