Researchers at the University of Kansas Medical Center released the results of a study at the 2008 International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease (ICAD) on Sunday that showed exercise slowed deterioration of the hippocampus in early Alzheimer's.
Researcher Robyn A. Honea said, "This is the first study to get an inside look into specifically where these changes occur in the brain — we're able to locate the changes associated with fitness to the actual memory region, the hippocampus."
Other studies presented at ICAD showed exercise also decreases falls, which are up to three times more common in people with dementia than in those who do not suffer dementia, due to increased balance.
