Rice Warned Georgia on South Ossetia, Russia in July

An unnamed senior US official who was with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during her July trip to Tbilisi said she warned Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili to avoid conflict with Russia even as she fingered Russia as part of the problem.

The official says "She told him, in no uncertain terms, that he had to put a non-use of force pledge on the table." He also said "We told them they had to keep their unilateral cease-fire. We said, be smart about this...Do not do this."

Washington was not told of the Georgian plans for offensive action against South Ossetia ahead of time, but the top US envoy for the region did get a phone call from Georgia's foreign minister on Thursday stating they were under attack.

  Yup.

They really wanted their asses handed to them.

So, how long before the US drops them?

  We won't drop 'em

They're kind of like our retarded little sister. Starts trouble and then expects to be bailed out. (At least that's what my brain-damaged youngest sister used to do when we were growing up.) After they get knocked around a bit you just say "OK, that's enough. Everyone pick up your toys and go home now." and hope they learned a lesson.

  The problem with that

Is that the little sister wrong doing rarely involve the harmed party to wish to have an excuse to occupy (ass rape?) the said sister in legitimy.

So now, Bush directly told Russia to get out, waiting for Putin answer. I'm pretty sure what it will be. A polite ; Or?

An implicit indication as to who the White House blames for 'starting' the assault.

  Good one

@morgora.

I got hold of the wrong end of the stick at first.

I detest the fact the Russia bombed civilians and in one case twice in one apartment block but the reasons to why this all started is only just unfolding over here in UK and in my head.

I think you are right @morgora good investigation lady! :)

  Part of the ongoing problem

seems to be the wording of the "peace agreement" brokered by the French. It seems to allow Georgia to move what's left of their army back into South Ossetia and Abkhazia while requiring Russia to leave Georgia. I certainly wouldn't say "Ok" to that. I'd say something more along the lines of "bite my ass".

I think there needs to be an agreement from Georgia that they'll leave those two areas alone - as they have for many years up until recently - before we start getting all mad at Russia for not leaving. You certainly don't retreat if you believe your interests are still in danger. Well, not if you have anything resembling common sense you don't.

  Americas warzone?

Anyone see that this war could turn severly nasty? The E.U. are treading on eggshells because they know that if they piss Russia off, we lose ALOT of vital resources Russia provides. Such as gas and oil. Russia has us Europeans by the balls and theirs squeezing. THEN America comes along and starts stirring, with Bush's wonderful way with words and peaceful nature, I can only see something similar to the Cold War unfolding. Its pretty bloody scary. Russias military might not be anything to note, but they can easy shut down massive chunks of Europe in one easy flick of a switch and without a bullet being shot.

Thats neocon bullshit and you know it. I love how hypocritical bush and other similar asshats can be when they talk about "russia invading a soverign state
". Why the hell would Russian want to annex Georgia or occupy it for an extended period of time? There's nothing to gain and only money and lives to lose... Do you think they want to annex Georgia and make dozens of dollars in tax revenue from the whole poverty riddled area?

  Seems I never got filtered news here.

@morgora
I dont know what you've read, but what I read is a statu quo. Back to were it was before the attack.

Russia never was strong on the humanitarian side of war. The russian couldnt care less about the georgian now. And public opinion wont care about them getting wiped. Recall an other russian warzone? Think back a little.

I read a lot of Norwegian and Swedish language papers and then cross-check with US papers, UK papers, etc.

What I've read is that lines are to be drawn back to where they were before Russia jumped into the fray, which would leave Georgia open to return to parts of South Ossetia they had briefly occupied. If they'd actually do that - I don't know. However, I can understand Russia using it as an excuse, valid or not, to not withdraw from the region.

I still have to watch and read a bit more before I decide what I think about everyone's motives in this little brouhaha.

@Red - I wouldn't call a nation with an estimated 16K-18K functional tactical nuclear weapons "nothing to note". They could still be kinda scary if you make them mad.

Every major nation has nukes. Russia seems to always seems to follow the 'quantity not quality' rule when it comes to marching armies. Thats why I say 'nothing to note'. At least thats how I see it.

You should play StarCraft and notice how quality (Protoss) cant overcome quantity (Zerg).

Could'nt find the exact text. Read something about Russia being able to finish some operation that was not mentioned, probably confiscating weapons and stuff, from what I saw.

Say wha now?

  by: Red!   08/14/2008 01:26 AM
  @Rv3

Yes all us Russians hate Georgians and want to see them dead... Erm... no not really. Your post really had nothing to do with what I sad as far as I can tell. Care to elaborate? What's the benefit of annexing or occupying Georgia? Do you believe Russians just like spending money, resources and lives on war for fun?

  by: OneEightSeven   08/14/2008 03:47 AM
  @Red!

Major nations have some nukes. The US and Russia have a LOT of nukes. The volume difference is quit staggering. Not to mention both countries' MIRV and ballistic missile technology is superior AFAIK. I'm not saying Russia's military is what it used to be when certain aspects of it had virtually unlimited funding, but it's still a decent force.

  No Reprimand for Georgia Rice?

Georgia shelled civilian areas and killed 2,000 out of the 70,000 South Ossetian inhabitants & 10 Russian peacekeepers in 2 days! Another 30,000 civilians fled North to Russia (note: no one fled to Georgia).

I don't think Russia's machinations (and there are plenty of 'em!) have anything to do with the issue here, the issue is Georgia was killing 1,000 civilians a day in a retarded, bungled operation until Russia bitch slapped them back to Tbilisi.

I'm not gonna start defending Russia but in this instance they have the moral authority IMO.
Shame on the west for not condemning the indiscriminate shelling of civilians.

  Seems Strange

Why would the US government now say, they warned Georgia not to attack? and they knew nothing of the attack before hand?
Seems like they are wanting to distance themselves from this.
More like they said we have your back go in and we will be with you, they never intended to help were hoping Russia would over play it and they could paint Russia as the aggressor and get more armament into the region.
And with the honesty of the Bush administration, that seems a very likely scenario. You have now the USA wanting to punish Russia over this and they full well knowing who started it.
I agree with lachs where is the reprimand for Georgia killing all the civilians.

Were did I said that? I never even mentioned the word hate. If you are going to comment at least do not attribute that kind of words when I havent use them.

So, tell me, how does Russia wage war usualy? Historicly?

How is russian public opinion on the subject of that war? Must be voicing a lot against it doesnt it? Caring about what is going to happen to the Georgian civilians?

That war is not about fun. It's a very important region. It is strategic into controling vital ressource suply lines. This war is about securizing a "main mise" on the european energy market.
