House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Democrat) is reported to have paid nearly US$100,000 from her political action committee to her husband's real estate and investment firm. She supported the banning of paying a spouse with political donations last year.
The Federal Election Commission records show that since Mr Pelosi took over as Mrs Pelosi's treasurer, the payments have quadrupled.
Mrs Pelosi has said that "Democrats are committed to reforming the way Washington does business."
Mrs Pelosi's office said the payments to her husband's firm are "perfectly legal."
