Parents Outraged at School System Over Song About a Cannabis Smoking Cockroach
Bosnia and Herzegovina: Outraged parents are demanding the recall of a Ministry of Education approved music book because it includes the traditional Spanish song La Cucaracha.
The version of the song in the book is about a cockroach who has smoked cannabis and can't get up as a result. The book, which was distributed to all primary schools, includes the Spanish version and a full translation.
"I could not believe it when I found out... The last thing I want my son learning about in primary school is drugs. Whoever made the ridiculous decision to put this book in schools must have been out of their head themselves," said one mother.
Well said! I think its a good idea to teach kids about all drugs, and not just "Just say NO" bullshit, actually teach them... that's what you're there for.
Its like teaching abstinence only, they're not going to learn that using a condom could have helped to avoid pregnancy or stds even. Many people seem to shun the thought of abstinence only education (at least in my state) but not sobriety-only (?) education?
What do the teachers have to tell the kids now? "Oh kids we can't sing La Cucaracha now, your parents have a stick up their ass.... I know I know it sucks."
I did the same thing today, sort of. I posted on Vhan's account again today, that whole blurb up there ^^ was me. Vhan is never ever ever ever up at 5am PST unless we're pulling an allnighter... in which case hes probably playing a videogame.
Wikipedia has several variations. It seems like one of those songs that you improv the verse when you get bored. I vaguely remember one where it ends "So sing me another verse that's worse than the first verse and swing me around by my willie." (@JonSmith, loved that song. ty!) Something like that anyway, my husband brought it home from drill one day.
On a personal note, I remember singing this song in kindergarten for a school presentation. I remember playing this song, several times, in school band during concert. I remember singing it with my mother and brother. Never before did I wonder about what the lyrics meant. Got some conflicting emotions now...
I thought the lyrics where "he is missing his left leg" that's why he couldn't get up. Damn high school Spanish & their lies.
Looks like people are still immature about this. Hide it from the kids! So when they grow up and can think for themselves they will be as ignorant as you!
public schools are rubbish, i plan on my kids being well informed when it comes to sex and drugs and all that, but when they are ready for it. im hoping actually communicating with my children will allow me to know when that is :) i dont want any overworked teacher to have these discussions with my kids.
That song was never about drugs. http://www.snopes.com/ 2. This article is about Bosnia And Herzegovina one of the many unstable Balkan nations. I am amazed to read that it actually has parents, students, and schools now. As far as the media, or their warring philoshophy is concerned I just imagine people crawling around in rubble and driving 90 year old cars. I'm so proud that they've made it to the point where they can complain about something so completely trivial, in enough mass that the whole world give a crap.
http://en.wikipedia.org/ He's often credited on writing a book on growing weed - which isn't the case. A complicated bong he designed was featured in the book, but that's all.
The song originated with "The Association" a very talented band including Tandyn. The band themselves were considered pretty "square" for the times, and friends of the group have repeatedly said the song is not about marijuana. However, as I noted, the author never weighed in on the matter.
Musically it is a brilliant piece in it's own right. I recommend checking out their version of it - it is much better then BHG's (IMHO)
that BHG also did this song. I was in high school when this came out by the Association and it was a big hit, rightfully so. The Association did seem awfully square and it was that about them that people denied the song was about weed. The book, 'A Child's Garden of Grass' was a must read for the every-day pothead, where they did reference Tandyn and his slave master bong. I recently saw it available on Amazon. And yes, it was a brilliant composition.
a Childs Garden of Grass, as a fantastically funny album around 1972. Didn't know it was a book! cool. What would they think about Alice in Wonderland ??? Regardless of what should be taught about drugs, etc. I agree with the parents, it really shouldn't be in school books before high school.
