Terrorist Tweet -- US Army Warns Militants are Utilising Twitter

The US army has sent out intelligence warnings that terrorists may be utilising the social networking tool Twitter to organise attacks. The warning is part of a full report on how terrorists are able to use the Web and other technologies.

The Twitter chapter of the report states: "Twitter has also become a social activism tool for socialists, human rights groups, communists, vegetarians, anarchists, religious communities, atheists, political enthusiasts, hacktivists and others..."

And goes on to say the above groups use it "to communicate with each other and to send messages to broader audiences." The report found that Twitter is already being used by extremists and terrorists to spread their message.

  Yep.

So is email, websites, text messages, and cell phones. Was an intelligence report really needed to state the obvious?

  So apparently your taste in foods makes you evil??

They placed vegetarians, atheists and human rights up on the same lists as terrorists! This is a poem that reminds me of what is starting to happen in the US.

When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I was not a Jew.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.

Vegetarians? Really?!?!

Cause we all know how much a problem we are having with those people who strap a bomb to themselves and run into a herd of cattle ...

  Silly terrorists, Tweets are for kids!

Everyone initially has the right to use a social networking service like Twitter, I suppose, but to think they could not just assemble but actually execute a dehabilitating blow against the "Allied" Nations is...well...an undereducated impression. Such behaviors would not escape notice, and any smaller 'successes' would have been allowed deliberately. You know, the whole 'fry the bigger fish' concept. Not to mention, it becomes an educational experience for all involved. I would only hope no innocent people are hurt in the process - I can dream, can't I?

  So the subtext is...

...let's clamp down on the internet, a la China. Not because we're anti-democratic, but to preserve your freedom™!

I doubt the Army's 304th MIB is in any position to "clamp down on the internet".

This report just says ways these technologies could be misused and gives links to forums with people talking about just that.

True, but you have to be careful with words. When you list these things in the same category as terrorists people will start sharing their hatred for terrorism with these others. Subtext like Mister Crank said.
