Two runners have died shortly after completing the New York City Marathon. One man, Carlos Jose Gomes, collapsed just over the finish line after he complained about feeling ill. He was taken to a Manahatten hospital where he died.
It was found the Brazilian athlete died of a heart attack. The second man has not been named, and his cause of death has not been released. A spokesperson for the medical examiner's office said it had not received a report of the second death.
President of the New York Runners Mary Wittenberg said: "There's nothing harder for us than when one of our participants doesn't make it home at the end of the day. We express our deepest condolences to the athletes' families."
