Russia Announces US Missile Shield “Neutralizer”

Russian President, Dmitry Medvedev has announced the deployment of a new missile near the NATO member Poland which he claims will “neutralize" the US anti-missile shield planned for the region.

The President made the announcement in his first state-of-the-nation address adding "Naturally, we also consider using for the same purpose the resources of Russia's navy".

Russia has for a long time seen the planned US shield as a direct threat to their interests despite assurances from Washington that the planned missile shield is designed to deter “rogue” nations

I still don't understand why: if I put on a bullitproof vest, that my neighbor feels he must then point a gun at me.
  by: Tumbleweed   11/05/2008 01:57 PM
Because if you're also pointing a gun at him and this has been the status quo for a while, he understandably my feel a bit threatened when you come up with a way to neutralise his gun.

a french news paper today :

"Russia welcome obama's success but will deploy missiles anyway"

Is a new face, at this point in time why would Russia not go ahead with this system to protect itself.
Bush put them in on the pretense of more fabricated BS and you expect Russia not to do anything?
I think Israel is very concerned Syria will be getting this system in the coming future.

  by: thinking   11/05/2008 02:30 PM
  I find it
Funny that with all the money that the patriot system costs and all the expectations.
It can be laid to rest with this much cheaper weapon from Russia.

"....Because if you're also pointing a gun at him and this has been the status quo for a while, he understandably my feel a bit threatened when you come up with a way to neutralise his gun...."

I am not understanding what you are saying?

This new Russian deployment of missles is a direct respons to the US missle shield. The missle shield is comprised not of offensive, but defensive armament; meaning, it's not missles that the US can shoot into Russia, but are defensive missles to shoot down incoming offensive missles.

This isn't a new issue of "pointing a gun at him", this is putting a vest on. What "pointing a gun at him: are you refering to?

Just for the record of my disposition - I think both sides nuts for escalating the issue - in any fashion.

  by: Tumbleweed   11/05/2008 03:00 PM
  @ Tumbleweed
Both sides have been pointing 'guns' at each other for a while in the form of a variety of different missiles.

With the Russians inventing a new weapon that can 'neutralise' the missile shield, all they are doing is restoring that status quo of mutually-assured destruction.
  by: Heresy   11/05/2008 03:40 PM
Why would israel be concerned about syria getting a an anti-nuke shield?

If anything, Syria should be getting the anti-nuke shield and israel should be rubbing russia the nice way to get the shield-buster.

But since the US will not hand over the shield to Syria and Russia will not hand over shield-busters to israel then it is all kosher down there.

  @ Heresy
OK, I think I see where you are coming from now with that last line.

Humans and their constant war ....... friggen idiots.
  by: Tumbleweed   11/05/2008 03:42 PM
I mean it will all be kosher and halal down there.
  by: kmazzawi     11/05/2008 03:42 PM
It's a stealth short range missile system and could knock out Israels radar system and leave them open to air attack.
This is a very good system.

Thanks, George, for doing so much to "secure" the world. Or at least to secure more contracts for your armament contractor buddies.

Thanks, Dimitry, for throwing another log on the fire so publicly when you might have done it more quietly and diplomatically first, seeing as you have someone coming in who might just listen for a change.

War is a crime. All who perpetrate or threaten it, criminals.

I like what you wrote.
"War is a crime. All who perpetrate or threaten it, criminals."
Then why is George still free?

  Bill Hicks died too soon
"I'm gonna share with you a vision that I had, cause I love you. And you feel it. You know all that money we spend on nuclear weapons and defense each year, trillions of dollars, correct? Instead -- just play with this -- if we spent that money feeding and clothing the poor of the world -- and it would pay for it many times over, not one human being excluded -- we can explore space together, both inner and outer, forever in peace."

-Bill Hicks, comedian and modern prophet
by: Mr. Wright     11/05/2008 07:03 PM
  @Mr. Wright
Why is he a modern prophet?
  by: thinking   11/05/2008 07:41 PM
  you know
that just means they are going to preemptively cluster bomb the area we have our shield at right? Either that or they are going to start using dumby missles with a larger profile to accompany any missiles. Its just basic.

There is no simple way about this.

@Wright - Then people would resent us. Its a no win game but I do agree we allocate way to much money to the Pentagon.
  by: Kuhl   11/05/2008 08:54 PM
  @thinking, kuhl
There is more wisdom than humor in Bill Hicks' work. He was ahead of his time, and his words apply to today's politics just as much as they did 15 years ago.

I people already resent us for doing just the opposite.

Two cowboys guns drawn, standing out in the street at high noon. One steps behind a wagon. The other cowboy responds by bringing up a canon. The arms race is on again.

This sums it up nicely.

lol russia has alot of problems
they would rather spend money on missle systems and missles why there economy and country is gone to hell in a hand basket faster then we elected in obama.

i think they should really sit back and think a little bit before they open there mouths and shoot themselves in the foot.
  by: cray0la     11/06/2008 02:18 AM
And our economy is doing so well???

Perhaps the US can learn a lesson from history about the Soviet Union and why it collapsed? No? Guess those that do not learn from the past are damned to repeat it.
  by: slavefortheman     11/06/2008 02:50 AM
This is typical behavior from Russia, different era, same mindset, but it's OK when you can control most of what your population sees on the evening news. President Put... sorry Medvedev... obviously picked today to maximize the attention this threat gets around the world, and perhaps to test Obama (who ironically has indicated he is flexible about the missile shield anyway).

Take the number of interceptors the U.S. wants to deploy in Poland and then subtract that from the number of nuclear weapons Russia is believed to have in its arsenal and you see that its totally inadequate.... BECAUSE ITS NOT AIMED AT RUSSIA!

Nevertheless, Putedvedev will use this as an excuse to show the world the toys they have been building with wealth they got from energy resources. Any excuse at all will do. As for people who like to point out America's problems for the past 8 years, no argument from me, but that doesn't make it OK for states like Russia to threaten anybody (and I'm not American btw).

The truth is, Russia has massive problems on its hands. It has an economy based on energy dollars when the Western countries are slowly but surely planning to lose their dependence on energy sources from rogue states (and help their friends to do so).

It suffers extreme corruption problems at all levels and it's friends are becoming more and more rare, and typically they are reaching out to enemies of the United States.... whose trying to start a Cold War here? The only country who can benefit from one is Russia... and by Russia I mean its leaders who need "the enemy within, the enemy with-out" and NOT the Russian people.

There is nothing I would like more than to see Russia as a responsible, prosperous, free nation, powerful on the world stage and using its influence to affect change for the better, but since Putin got into office, with his colorful background and erection for his beloved KGB/FSB, that vision is now as far away as it ever was.... and that was the time when the U.S., NATO etc. needed and DID change their stance on Russia and further NATO integration and expansion... it was only a matter of time.

Don't think this is the last we'll hear from Russia, even if the defense shield plans are scrapped and something is worked out with Abkhazia and St. Ossetia, Russia will find something else again and again.. and we'll have the Russian media to distort it and plenty of people on the Internet to write it up and paint America/NATO as the bad guy every chance they get......
  by: Dela     11/06/2008 02:56 AM
  I think
it would be kinda cool if everyone with nuclear weapons just used them all at once to see what would happen. I bet you could read a newspaper at midnight.
  by: RyanB     11/06/2008 04:37 AM
Except we will all be dead...
  by: THISisNEWS   11/06/2008 08:00 AM
yes, Iran's president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wouldn't hesitate to launch missiles if provoked. "Stand up to your oppressors!"
  by: ukpunk1   11/06/2008 08:01 AM
  Here's an idea
Why not disarm the whole zone? It's worked before.
  by: l´anglais     11/06/2008 08:42 AM
Excellent, I have been saying that for years. Russia, China, and the US, get together, tell the idiots to hand over all their weapons, and I mean ALL of them. We take away the bombs, tanks, planes, cannons, etc. They can then kill each other with rocks and sticks and knives for as long as they want. Oh, and yes, we will guarantee Israel's security, with a rotating force of Jewish people from America. We will build them a giant fence to protect them from their neighbors! While we are at it, can we build a big fence around my house too? My neighbors all seem to hate me for some reason.

Funny! You know you could substitute Bush for Putin, and USA for Russia, and your piece would still make sense? NATO was not supposed to be expanded, that was a promise made by Ronald Reagan, was he a damn liar? Maybe so, as his promise has not been kept. I like that way you people "parrot" the party line. Ever heard of "mission creep"? Well, that's what you would have here. Read "The Project for a New American Century" and you will find why the Russians are suspicious. The whole thing is predicated on keeping all other world powers in check through the use of military and economic intimidation! Guess what, the world is not buying "That Project". It's a damn ghetto! You are witnessing the end of an era. The new American century has gone down in flames, with GWB and John McCain at the controls. Be sure to thank the turncoat Joe Lieberman too! Bush and McCain, two very loosy pilots! Keep them on the ground, and on KP!!
