While there is no known drug to treat low sexual desire in women, a recent study has found that the male hormone testosterone has been effective in increasing the libido of postmenopausal women.
The number of women in the U.S. who have been using testosterone off-label has been increasing. While it is being used to assist in increasing sexual desire, arousal, and achieving orgasm, the safety of the treatment remains in question.
A total of 814 women with sexual desire disorders participated in the 52-week study. Some women wore a 300 or 150 microgram patch while others used a placebo. However, women using the higher dose of the hormone experienced increased facial hair.
