Your Pain is My Pleasure

A new study suggests that aggressive teens who watch videos of one person inflicting pain upon another activates the portion of the brain that is associated with reward. However, it does not appear to occur with non-aggressive teens.

The activity in the area of the brain is known as the amygdala and ventral striatum, indicates that aggressive teens enjoy watching pain being inflicted upon others.

The study conducted at the University of Chicago also indicated that when videos showed pain inflicted accidentally the result was not the same as the result of watching videos of intentionally inflicted pain.

  It sure proves a point...

Maybe kids who become bullies have some genetic disposition to do that.

Hmm!

Perhaps I'm missing the point of this study...but it doesn't seem groundbreaking to prove that someone who enjoys watching pain being inflicted would enjoy watching pain being inflicted. I like playing and watching golf....and you know what? I enjoy playing and watching golf too!

i think the point of the study was to show which parts of the brain are lighting up for these aggressive kids. it's not just some personality defect but a brain wiring issue and something they genuinly can't seem to control. the non-aggressive control group had a completely different part of the brain activate during the videos. it is important to know to better treat the kids with aggressive tendancies.
now if they can figure out WHY the brains are wired in this fashion the study would be truly beneficial, it's a pity they didn't.
