Leo DiCaprio to Remake 'Akira' and 'Ninja Scroll'

Appian Way, Leonardo DiCaprio's production company, is currently working to film live-action adaptations of anime classics. 'Akira' and 'Ninja Scroll' are two films currently in the works. DiCaprio will not star in either film.

It is rumored that Joseph Gordon Levitt (3rd Rock from the Sun, 10 Things I Hate About You) will play the role of Tetsuo, the telekinetic who brings Neo-Tokyo to the brink of total annihilation.

  Total waste of money
Why do these [pretentious] leeches feel this need to remake movies that are perfectly fine as they are? No amount of special effects is going to make these movies better than the originals, nor even that good. I remember seeing something about this on wikipedia and wept.

  Not better, just different
I've come to the realization that many remakes aren't necessarily out to make something better, merely to remake it through a slightly different perspective or interpretation.

I think it would be interesting to see if the artistic integrity and storytelling is maintained or if the movie will just be made for effects. Certainly effects can be cool, but if they do effects at the cost of real acting and plot, then it's a waste.

I'll withhold my judgment at least until I see a trailer.

For the record, I like and own both movies.

Both films have a small cult following that will be offended by the remake while most people not into anime have no idea what these films are.

The stories of these 2 films are better than most new ideas that are made into movies nowadays. They are also very japanese in nature and form, so there's a good chance they'll just become trash after being "americanized". Just think about the upcoming Dragonball Z adaptation. I can hardly imagine them succeeding.

Let's just hope it's better than the old Guyver low budget movies or Uwe Bole's crap.

  Just read the source
These projects of his are still in the very early stages of the development cycles. Having a final draft doesn't mean anything if you can't secure financing and the Ninja Scroll project seems to be "in development".

I wouldn't be surprised if they were made eventually, but I wouldn't hold my breath for their release in the next few years. Just think of the upcoming Watchmen movie that has been in development hell since the mid 80's. Took them nearly 20 years and countless "final drafts".

Some people thought Akira was great, but still nothing compared to the Manga it was based off of.

This is not really any different than manga to anime or a movie adaption of a book. Animation to live action is going to offer it's fair share of pros and cons, and I say, give them their fair chance ;D

news, this has been know for over a year by now, Di caprio is just the producer, and is part of the upcoming wave of japanese turned american wave of movies that will come over the next years to fight against marvel and dc movies, hopefully, afther the fiasco that DBZ promise to be, this movies will be good.

  It's official...
...there is no G_d.

Well, if there is, he's a cruel and sadistic bastid who enjoys watching people suffer through horrible, horrible remakes.

Damn I think i'm starting to forget what the definition to "original" is.

I'd like a live action akira
but i'd prefer it to be filmed with a full japanese cast.

  American's making a Japanese movie
I'm getting Ring and Grudge flashbacks. Hopefully they don't dumb it down... I mean, Americanize it much.
