Millions Awarded to Teen Beaten by KKK

In a case that drew large media attention Friday, the jury has awarded $2.5 million to a teen who was severely beat by the Klan after they incorrectly identified him as an illegal immigrant.

In a serious blow to the terrorist organization, the law center responsible for the lawsuit could seize the Klan's assets, including the headquarters, a 15-acre compound in Dawson Springs, Kentucky.

"All I could see was a bunch of feet," Gruver, now 19, testified. "As they were kicking me, I prayed to myself."
The incident left Gruver with several broken bones, cuts and bruises.

  Why.. WHY?
Why do we have groups like this still? This isn't the 1800's anymore!

I get so sick at humanity at times, I mean I'm a hopeful person, I really hope that one day we'll put all of this shit behind us and grow up as a species, but seeing stories like these give me such heartache.....

Put the KKK out of business ...
and ship their members to Guantanamo Bay. They belong there a hell of a lot more than some Afghan goat herders.

I second that motion. These people are a disgrace to all of mankind.
  by: NicPre     11/16/2008 01:21 AM
I Don't See Much Differance Between
Thee KKK and The people that run Guantanamo.

They both lack respect for human rights.

Give the kid every penny they have.
I respect their right to peaceful protest but to beat anyone for any reason other than self defense is horrible and should be punished severely.
I have never been able to understand how a person can have hatred in their heart for someone they don't know.

Given that, this happened in the USA, You are talking about the same people. KKK + USArmy = Americans.

I, just like Vash has hopes for humanity, and for some reasons, I, not being an American was relieved when Americans elected change.

To see that there are a bunch of bad apples in this great country, I wish and hope, a law can be passed to stop these kinds permanently.

I dont know whats there to achieve out of allowing such groups to continue flourishing from the Idiom of hate!. All in the name of freedom of expression and speech.

I share your belief that these people bring nothing of value to society but to enact legislation against them would be a step backward for this country.
They have a right to their opinions and a right to verbally express them. What they don't have the right to is physical violence.
Legislation against them would be akin to the abortion and gay marriage laws we now have.
These people are a cancerous growth that can only be removed by education & time.
The scariest thing about it to me is the fact that these people justify their hatred with the bible.

  Okay, Okay...
...the Klan are bad. Fine.

But I'm pissed off because the article was careful to mention that the kid was "mistaken" for an "illegal immigrant".

Ergo, he wasn't African-American.

But African-Americans have been getting beaten down forEVER in this country...BY the Klan, no less. Bensonhurst comes to mind- Black kid caught in the undertow comes ashore on a "White" beach and was beaten to DEATH. In the freaking 90s!

Have Blacks been getting 2.5M for beatings they've received at the hands of Klansmen?
  by: dtla1730   11/16/2008 04:01 AM
It goes without saying that the young man was not "African-American". Illegal immigrants cannot be defined as "anyrace-American". Immigrant means foreigner.
In case you are not aware, the Klan does not reserve it's hatred for blacks. They hate many races and religions. In fact, they only like you if you are christian AND white AND as ignorant and intolerant as them.
I do agree with you that their money should long since have been awarded previous victims of their vicious hatred.

As much as I personally dislike and disagree with the KKK, denying them the right to peacefully protest and gather together would indeed be a step backward in this country. I will fight for their right to do so, even if they are in my opinion the scum of the Earth.

kkk + USArmy <> Americans
It was a jury of Americans who unanimously decided that the kkk owed this teen.
America is not the only country that has this type of hatred, but we are working against this type of behavior.
This case proves that we are succeeding.

  With Ben...
on this, it is high time people like this learned they have no place in our world. Hard labor for life I say!

I wish some Native Americans would CORRECTLY identify the KKK as illegal immigrants and beat the crap out of them.

What would there defense be then? THEY THEMSELVES ARE IMMIGRANTS.

What makes a crime into a hate crime?
The FBI's hate-crime report for 2002 quotes a statement about hate crimes by the American Psychological Association:

"...not only is it an attack on one's physical self, but is also an attack on one's very identity." Attacks upon individuals because of a difference in how they look, pray or behave have long been a part of human history. It is only recently, however, that our society has given it a name and decided to monitor it, study it and legislate against it." 1

The FBI defines a hate crime (a.k.a. bias crime) to be:

"a criminal offense committed against a person, property or society which is motivated, in whole or in part, by the offender's bias against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnicity/national origin." 2

Public Law #103-322A, a 1994 federal law, defines a hate crime as:

"a crime in which the defendant intentionally selects a victim, or in the case of a property crime, the property that is the object of the crime, because of the actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, ethnicity, gender, disability, or sexual orientation of any person." 3

It is important to realize that crimes motivated by a hatred of a person's sexual orientation -- whether the victim is a heterosexual, bisexual or homosexual -- are already defined as hate crimes. However, federal laws only attach an extended sentence penalty to those hate crimes that are motivated by racism, sexism or xenophobia. Hate crimes based on gender, sexual orientation or disability do not result in extra sentences.

  I dont understand
Why is the KKK allowed to exist?
  by: Eidron   11/17/2008 01:44 PM
Because it's not illegal to be a bigot nor to consort with other bigots.
