Psychiatric researchers from Great Britain suggest that there is a lack of scientific evidence for the effectivity of coerced medication (CM) carried out in psychiatric hospitals and profound studies for alternative ways of curing mental diseases.
A study's co-author said: "The studies showed that patients experienced a range of negative feelings when they received CM, including fear, embarrassment, anger and helplessness". Hence the researchers call for further studies on this issue.
Moreover, the study reveals that persons who were coerced medicated lived with higher risk of diagnosis of bipolar disorder or schizophrenia in their thirties. It is suggested, "that CM is a 'taken for granted' practice in inpatient psychiatry".
