Egypt: 23-year-old Haitham Nabeel Abdelhamid has been given a 6 year prison sentence for manslaughter after he fatally punched an 11-year-old student who didn't do his math homework. The boy suffered 4 broken ribs and died of heart failure.
"The problem is the teaching and the teachers because they cannot find good teachers. The minister of education should be the first person to be accused - how can he agree to let such a young man teach children?" said the child's father.
Abdelhamid's lawyer said that his client was disciplining the student and did not break the law as striking a student is not banned. The government claims to be working on reforms to education where inexperienced teachers have classes of up to 100.
