Zavvi Downfall: Your Gift Cards Can No Longer Be Used Instore

UK: Zavvi is following in the footsteps of Woolworths and going into administration after the collapse of both their main suppliers; Woolworths Entertainment UK. Zavvi was only bought out and rebranded last September by management.

It is not known how many people recieved gift cards and to what amount as presents or collecting for a bigger purchase but the cards can no longer be used in the store, leaving many dissapointed children and adults looking to spend their present.

People will have to contact the administrators to find out if they can get a refund on the gift cards.

Zavvi employs around 3,400 people, all of whom have their jobs in doubt.

Why I never believed in gift cards

This is why I never understood why people were stupid enough to take their cash and buy these things and say I'll only buy it from this one store, and this one store only. Its absurd how many gift cards they have over here in the US, the even sell gift cards for other stores at a grocery store i shop at. Hope these people get their money back somehow.

  Gift cards are dumb

"I didn't get you anything, but here is something worse then cash!"

If people knew how many gift cards NEVER get spent (they get lost/destroyed/stolen) no one would buy them. Its just one extra way for big business to make money off of idiots.

  Agreed.

Gift cards are a waste of money, and a scam.

Walk in Wal-Mart and as you check out you'll see racks and racks of them for Applebee's, Red Lobster, even BestBuy!

They offer no monetary advantage - you may as well keep your cash.

Many people get $25.00 gift cards, spend $23.50 of it, and leave the other $1.50 on there and throw the card away. I wonder if they realize they just GAVE that corporation money for NOTHING.

  I hate those things

I work at a credit card processing company and we do not accept gift cards. You would not believe how many people get upset over it.

Also I had some lady who was mad because she paid $10 for a visa gift card and then made a purchase at a website we bill for. She was like but I paid for the gift card! And I was like yeahhh but you made a purchase at this website. She claimed she was going to blog nasty things about us on her website. I was like uh, ok.

  I hate gift cards

I never did understand why anyone would want to transform their money into a voucher that can only be spent in one store? and this is yet another reason why it bullshit.

if your giving a present, just give the cash, its more usefull.

  I only use gift cards...

...at places like Wal-Mart, where I know are going to be around for decades to come. I buy them on average for 10% less than what they are worth, otherwise I wouldn't use them period as they are really are a pain. You are limited to one or two stores (walmart/sams) and you will end up spending more at the end to just use up that small amount of cash left on it rather than let it go to waste.

"I never did understand why anyone would want to transform their money into a voucher that can only be spent in one store?"

Simple - you can't trust the person you are giving the gift to. The only reason why I give gift cards instead of cash is because it's the only way I can guarantee the gift recipient will actually spend the $ on a gift. I've heard plenty of stories of people who got cash as a gift waste it on something besides a gift like their debt. Don't get me wrong people should pay their bills but I don't want to help them. I want them to have something that will take their mind off of whatever it is they don't want to think of.

If i had a gift card

i would go into the shop take something off the shelf to the value of my gift card, throw the gift card at the person at the counter and walk out. What are they going to do, call the police, bring down a whole heap of negative publicity on them selves and risk a law suit that could further cripple the company. On a personal note i hate gift cards and anyone that knows me wouldn't dare buy me one, there is no point to them, a present is supposed to be a surprise giving someone, a gift card allows the person to become a decision maker in the whole gift process, you don't want this because whilst you will receive your shitty pair of socks they will use there gift card and have the potential to purchase something they actually need or want thus screwing up the whole crappy present equilibrium that has been going on for thousand of years. People just don't know whats at stake!. My girlfriend received an itunes gift card years ago, we never used it, it kills me to think that apple has just made 100% profit from the gift card but it would be more painful to actually purchase something from apple.

"Simple - you can't trust the person you are giving the gift to."

Wow, thats cold. What kind of friends do you keep where you don't trust them? And surely they would know what they need better than you could know yourself?

"The only reason why I give gift cards instead of cash is because it's the only way I can guarantee the gift recipient will actually spend the $ on a gift. I've heard plenty of stories of people who got cash as a gift waste it on something besides a gift like their debt."

You think its a waste by helping to lighten someones debt, are you serious?

"Don't get me wrong people should pay their bills but I don't want to help them."

Why not, isn't that the main point behind giving gifts. To help make people happier. If reducing their debt is the best thing they can think of to do with the money, then why not let them do exactly that?

"I want them to have something that will take their mind off of whatever it is they don't want to think of. "

That gift could have reduced their debt, bringing them closer to being free from it. Which ultimatly would make them happier sooner.

But you would rather force them, even against their own will to spend it on something non esential.

That just sounds wrong to me. Maybe I'm miss interpreting what your saying, but I don't think so.
