Lithuania Protest Goes Awry When Hooligans Throw Snowballs

A peaceful group of protesters turned against police after hooligans joined in. Snowballs being thrown at police soon became rocks, bottles, and fireworks. Police responded with tear gas and shooting rubber bullets into the crowd.

The protesters had gathered to speak out against an ill-conceived plan to raise taxes to avert further economic crisis. Arturas Zuokas, Mayor of Vilnius and a member of the majority party, insists that the decision was strange and made in haste.

One young protestor stated "...I think this is shit– our parliament works bad– people are without work... We have to pay for cars, but we have no money. I don’t think the police should have acted like this, because we haven’t done anything.”

... that's not a rubber bullet, it's a tear gas canister stuck in his leg. Ouch.

There is a funny part where a cop shoots teargas into the shield of the guy in front of him.... keystone cops.

Could be worse, its not like Russia is slowly trying to regain control of its former states... Yikes... well...

Never raise taxes in economic down turn, that's suicide for a politician and on a economic level.

  yep

They just spent millions on a new Presidential 'Duke's' Palace, hundreds of millions on a soccer stadium that has yet to be built because all of the money has gone to bribes and illegal tender offers.

Meanwhile, the children hospital around the countries are falling apart, all the best doctors have left for countries that pay real money... pensioners are starving. This place sounds more like the USA every day.

Ironically, the site of the riot is exactly where many people were killed by Soviets after Lithuania said 'F.U.' to communism. Now the people have the freedom to be corrupt.

  151 arrests

5 people taken to the hospital with injuries.

Tell me, you corrupt fat bastard 'politicians', is this what you fought for so many years ago?

  Hospitals should be first.
