Geithner -Secretary of the Treasury Despite Tax Evasion

Timothy Geithner was confirmed today as Secretary of the Treasury. The vote was 60 to 34. During the vetting process it was discovered that Geithner owed $34,000 for taxes from 2001 to 2004.

There was disagreement on whether this tax situation was a mistake on Geithner's part, or intentional. Geithner has played a leading role in the bailouts for financial institutions as of late.

When made aware of the error, Geithner paid back 2003 taxes and for some compensation in 2004 - however the statue of limitations had run out on 2001 and 2002. Geithner was scheduled to be sworn in right after the vote.

  Yikes.
If you look at this guy's career history, you would be scared.

Sad that he could not run quickbooks, but is not in charge of the Treasury. Oh well, I guess they figured its messed up the way it is, whats another joker to get rich.

  Well...
He comes with some pretty good background, the stock market rallied the day his name was mentioned for the position.

But let's not pull a bush-con and say it's all good because he has a D or R next to his name...

Let's call an egg for an egg, and it's not comforting when it's on this guys face.

Very disturbing move on Obama's part..
This is tantamount to assigning an admitted pedophile as headmaster of an elementary school.

I can't remember if I have said this before, so forgive me if I have. Business as usual.

  hmm
I think his resume looks pretty impressive actually ronpaul. Besides the obvious nepotism. So much for the beloved meritocracy, huh?

He is a man of the world not just the US, something the US definitely needs.

Besides, I thought failing to pay taxes is something you would agree with.

point is, the guy skipped out on paying taxes and because of the rank he was going to obtain he isnt gonna get a sever audit by the IRS. if he was joe schmo he would be sweating. so thats the part most ppl are like give me a break for once.
 by: DRK   01/27/2009 12:19 PM
  It gets better
He only paid the taxes the audit found for 2003 and 2004 when he was audited in t 2006. Once he was vetted by the Obama administration, he paid the taxes for 2001 and 2002. Now, I can't say for sure, but he probably would not have had paid that had he not been vetted for the position. Some innocent mistake.

Why did the IRS not audit further back if they knew he was not paying his taxes?

Bottom line: Different President, same Sh*t.

  LOL
"This is tantamount to assigning an admitted pedophile as headmaster of an elementary school"

I don't think I'd go this far. Yes, he ducked $34K in taxes, but I actually believe that this was a mistake. People who really want to avoid taxes do it in a way that it can't be questioned, through holding companies and offshore corporations and the like. And they usually avoid paying millions, not 34K.

However, this smacks to me of the old "a blowjob in the oval office is far more damaging to our country than killing 1.3 million people overseas" argument.

  Connect the Dots
Listen. If you, Mr. or Mrs. average American did not pay $34,000 in taxes do you think you would not even get a LETTER in the mail? Please - to think that he did not know about this is trully crazy. I was off on my taxes last year by $192 and I recieved more mail from the IRS than I can count.

Do you understand that is 2003 he was the PRESIDENT of the FEDERAL RESERVE???? Guess where we send our tax money? The federal reserve!! So why would he send his money to himself?

Yep, that was a bit harsh. Actually I meant it more as an analogy then a comparison of the severity of the offense. Although, I must say, you can do a LOT more time for tax fraud than child molesting in a lot of cases. They frown upon sex crime but the WILL NOT tolerate tax evasion..... so long as they think you can afford the fines.

As for the honest mistake bit, that's all the more reason to keep him from this position. If he is that irresponsible with his personal finances he has no business tending to our tax dollars, IMO.
