Exterminated: John Scott Martin, the Actor Who Played Lead Dalek in 110 Episodes, Dies

John Scott Martin, the actor who played the lead Dalek between 1964 and 1980 in the hit television series 'Dr Who' has died of unspecified causes. During his 110 episodes he exterminated five Doctor Whos. Martin had been suffering from Parkinson's.

"The Daleks were a great success. They were the first real robotic bad guys and the first screen monsters where you didn't realize there was a person inside," said Martin in an interview before his death.

In addition to his role as a Dalek Martin also featured in 'Little Shop of Horrors' and 'Pink Floyd The Wall'. He is survived by his wife Margaret and daughter Catriona. His wife paid tribute to a fun man who loved people and was loved in return.

  He had a good run

82 ain't half bad. A good run.

I'm confused as to why the article says the Daleks exterminated five Doctors. As far as I'm aware they didn't directly kill a single one.

From the source: "...the bad-guy robot he played, which killed five Doctor Whos through the years..."

I haven't seen a lot of the early stuff so I don't know much about it but I would be interested to find out if the source is indeed accurate. Do we have any massive Dr Who fans in the house?

He was killed directly and indirectly by The Master a bunch of times, but never the Daleks (unless you count Bad Wolf, but that was well after Martin was done with the role).

The last two are the only Dalek related ones to the best of my knowledge, and they were in the last 3 years.

  I don't think

I don't believe information is available regarding his regeneration during the time war, but he was exterminated by a dalek in the last season by a dalek blast. He regenerated but all the same... he did in fact die.

I have the dalek episodes all on my desktop I'll have to watch them sometime soon :-) I'll get back to yas.

  If you like

I don't really count it. He never stopped breathing and think one of his hearts was still going throughout the entire process. He certainly came close, triggering a regeneration cycle, but he didn't fully regenerate which is why Casanova is still playing him.

How the 8th Doc died is up for grabs. Nothing cannon deals with it. It is suggested he died in the Last (or was it Great?) Time War, but never plainly stated I don't think. He could quite easily have died after the war.

I checked out this news story predicting beforehand that someone will be mentioning the word "Exterminate" ... and you are that someone. When you play Monopoly I bet you say, "Wouldn't be cool if all this money was real." There's always one.
